Jenny shrugged. Living in harmony would mean willingness to give blood, and she doubted that most humans would even briefly consider doing so. She wondered if he'd be willing to. His blood smelled fantastic, after all. Or maybe it was just because she hadn't had human blood in two years. She glanced over at the glass wall, noticing that one of the human nurses was watching the two of them, almost disapprovingly.
-
"Hmm.. Okay. It was just food for thought. I bet it wouldn't happen, though-" Lucas stopped when he noticed that she was looking at something that was behind them. He slowly stood, turning to see what had caught her attention. Another nurse was standing there, watching them. His smile disappeared. If there was anything he hated more than treating other spieces as specimens, it was being frowned upon. He disliked that judging look. That look was something he had been all too familiar with as a child. He turned away, scratching the back of his head. He put on a fake smile. "Hahah.. Jen, are you hungry?"
-
She nodded, noticing his reaction. She scooted forward to sit in front of him, then hissed at the nurse watching them.
-
-
Lucas laughed, a real smile creeping onto his face. He sat criss cross apple sauce, putting his chin in a hand. "I can't give you my blood, sadly, but I can give you animal blood like usual. Does it matter what kind?"
-
HELLALUJAH
She looked a little disappointed, and shrugged. He smelled wonderful. Really, all she wanted was a taste. Animal blood was disgusting. -
PRAISE THE LORD
THE DARKNESS RESPONDED
Lucas gave her a sad smile as he stood up to retrieve the blood. He felt bad for her. He wondered if drinking animal blood was just as bad as a vegetarian being forced to eat meat. It probably was. He exited the room, going for the container across the hall to get her a bag of blood. -
I THOUGHT I'D DIE BEFORE IT HAPPENED
She watched as he left, briefly considering taking him down once he came back and stealing his identification cards. Some of the other vampires had been discussing it, or at least, she could hear what she thought were plans to overtake a few humans. The other nurse was still watching, and approached him as he grabbed some blood. -
-
DON'T DIE
Lucas hadn't noticed that the other nurse had followed him. When he had retrieved a bag and turned, he almost screamed like a girl when he saw another human face so close. Putting a hand to his chest, he backed up, wearily staring at the nurse. "Can I help you with anything? Do you have any questions?" -
I'M STILL ALIVE BUT I'M BARELY BREATHING
"You really shouldn't be shouldn't be spending so much time with the vampires. They're just specimens, and you know we shouldn't form bonds with them." She stood there for a few seconds longer, threw a disapproving glance at Jenny, who had gone back to watching emotionlessly. The nurse walked away, clearly bothered by Lucas's actions. -
KEEP ON BREATHING b----
Lucas frowned at her words, standing there with a pained look in his eyes. As much as he hated it, she was right. Jenny- No, the vampire.. The vampire was merely just a specimen. Nothing more. But it was so frustrating to him to think of her that way. She wasn't just a specimen. She was a living being, just like humans. "Well, mostly.." He whispered. He put his head on the bag, walking into the cell. -
She watched, the words of the nurse ringing in her ears. She was trying to pretend it didn't hurt, but it was terrible to be regarded only as a test subject. She'd lasted centuries longer than any of these humans had, and they had the nerve to treat her like nothing.
-
"Jenny, don't feel upset. I would never think of you that way. You're more than that. You're my.." He wanted to say 'friend'. But that was strictly prohibited. He could lose his job if he said that. And probably his life. He sighed, closing his eyes. "You're my.. Uh.. 'Specimen'. I won't let anyone say otherwise, okay?" Lucas walked over to her, holding out the blood bag. He gave her a sad smile. "Not everyone is willing to open up to vampires. Most people are afraid. So don't think everyone is like me. I'm the odd man out. Please, ignore their words, okay?"
-
She took the bag silently, and raised it to her lips, puncturing it and then sucking out the blood. She would've hugged him, to make a point, if the other nurse had still been there. However, doing so would probably cost both of them their lives, if anyone else found out. After she finished the blood, she reached over and took his hand, and gave it a gentle squeeze. She really appreciated his actions, even if they were small.
Somewhere outside, a voice came over the intercom and reminded the nurses on duty that their shift was over, and that the next shift would be coming in soon.
