Reyna threw her coffee cup into a garbage bin she passed, speeding up slightly. Moving in smooth, long strides, she took another turn. She was deep in the city now, amongst all of its secrets. Turning her head a bit as she stepped gingerly around the outline of a body on the ground, she checked to make sure her tail was still following her. She didn't know why the police bothered with outlining the dead bodies found on the streets anymore. There were so many dead, and the killing percentages had gone up and continued to escalate at an alarming rate.
That was what she was here to change, right?
She hesitated as she reached a dead end, cursing her lack of attention on where she was going. It didn't leave Reyna many more options. Turning in a quick movement, she pulled a pistol from her side and aimed it at her tail. -
Maru turned the corner sharply and promptly tripped over the corpse lying directly in her path.
"Son of a b----!" she gasped, drawing her skinned knee up to her chest for closer examination and losing her focus for a moment in the process. Once she was satisfied that no damage had been done, she quietly apologized to the stiff before standing up and dusting herself off. Returning her attention to the girl, she started moving again before realizing the girl had stopped. And pulled a gun.
"Woah!" she exclaimed, throwing her hands up immediately. Her voice shifted on a dime, taking on a thick accent. "I'm sorry, so sorry! Hablo espanol si un dos tres carne es buena." She couldn't speak Spanish past a few basic words and phrases, and that meant she could only hope this girl didn't even speak that much. And also that she wouldn't think twice about the fact that Maru was white and pale as the snow. -
Reyna tilted her head at the woman. "You aren't Spanish." She said in a level tone, keeping the gun steady. She'd only shot a person a few times, and each time the shots hadn't been fatal. But something inside her knew she could pull the trigger if she had to, and leave another dead body for the police to outline.
If they found it. -
Maru held her hands up higher and did her best to smile nicely.
"Alright alright. That maybe wasn't the best way to introduce myself." she said apologetically. "Let's try again. My name's Linda Newman. I just wanted to talk to you is all. Is that okay?" -
IHLAOY Novice(That's fine.)
For a brief second, Vivian was sharply reminded of exactly why she was so scared of Nikkili. It wasn't just the cold detached way he dealt with their attackers, or the hopped up weapons he carried or even the large gang following behind him. It was that maniacal grin he had as he pulled the firefight a little closer to hell. It was probably where he was most comfortable.
A splatter of wet blood hit Vivian in the face, and she rubbed her face hastily to remove it. She didn't want that feeling again. Not again, not ever. She was done with violence.
The gunshots went silent for a moment, and Vivian poked her head out of cover. "I think...I think they're pulling back," Vivian said, pulling her hands, and the revolver, away from her chest, "I think you might want this back, I mean, I'm never going to use it. Do you need any help, sir? I've taken enough bullets to know how to fix them; just be glad it didn't shatter your arm." -
Reyna frowned. "Wouldn't it have been much easier to simply ask me to talk instead of tailing me for a couple miles?" Nevertheless, she lowered the gun slightly.
-
Nikkili had a blood-lust for killing marauders like the ones he was facing now. "VICTORY IS OURS!" He yelled out as he shot a few muggers running away. "AGH!" Was the most common type of speech that they gave. Once he almost single-handedly wiped out a small army of the foolish un-trained muggers, he wept his thin, black eye-brow, letting a few sweat drops, drop.
He then turned his attention towards Vivian. "Why were you so frail?" He calmly asked. It seemed nearly impossible, one minute he was in-sane, the next calm and patient. "We need to get you a different line of work." He said, with a bit of a grim tone to it, likely the after-effects of the battle.
He then picked up his vest, removed it from the weak position it had taken over, and strapped it around his shoulders, sides, and torso. He then took the revolver Vivian held out, put it into his holster, and lent out a hand, saying "You were pathetic out in the field. Think you can take on a more... Diplomatic approach?". -
IHLAOY Novice"Karma, sir." Vivian said, swallowing nervously. Reaching forward slowly, she grabbed Nikkili by the wrist and ran her hand over his arm softly. A second later, she found his pulse; still regular, and pushed herself back to her feet.
He was talking, so his airway was clear enough, but that didn't mean he was fully safe yet. Walking around him, Vivian searched for an exit wound. "Can you move all your fingers? We'll need to get to a hospital if you can't."
Finding the wound again, Vivian did her best to stop the bleeding. "You know karma? What goes around comes around. If you told me a couple of years ago that I would refuse to shoot at someone shooting at me, I would call you crazy. Cause believe me, I was good, at shooting people. Best in the business so to say."
"But where did it get me, huh? Several hundred thousand dollars in debt, a police record longer than yours and blood. So much blood on my hands. And then one day I woke up; hungover, broke, my brother missing, covered in various fluids and I thought, 'damn, this is some bulls---.' So I changed," Vivian said.
Pulling her glasses off for a second, Vivian looked at Nikkili, "I don't kill anymore, sir. Karma hates it, my brother would hate it, I hate it, and it's given me nothing but regret and ruin." -
Maru chuckled as easily as she could given the circumstances, keeping her hands up.
"I think it probably would have been, but you see, I make it a point to know the faces of the people around here, and since you look new to me I didn't want to just walk up to you. You know how it is around here." she motioned to the gun in the girl's hand with a jerk of her elbow. "Everyone's packing." -
Reyna narrowed her eyes, but she lowered her arms all the way. The pistol remained in her right hand, and she was pretty sure the tight muscles in her arms would give away her immediate wariness and uneasiness to anyone observant enough to look.
"Well, I'm here now. Talk to me." She said, trying to force her body to relax as much as possible. Or at least appear relaxed. -
Maru lowered her arms a bit as well, smiling reassuringly.
"Like I said, I'm Linda Newman." she spoke slowly, trying to keep her voice level. "What's your name? And what are you doing in this town?" -
Reyna shrugged. "What everyone else is trying to do. Get away from the s--- going on elsewhere." She shot a pointed glance towards the outlined body on the street behind them, "This clearly isn't the place to look for respite."
She shifted her feet forward so she was in a less stiff stance, facing 'Lydia'. "My name is Reyna White." She faked her last name on a quick thought, realizing she probably should have done the same with her first. Oh well. -
Maru angled her head oddly to get a good look at the corpse at her feet, blinking with forced sadness. She happened to know that this guy was a piece of s--- and had very much deserved this, but if anything helped her innocent image, she was willing to go along with it.
"Yes, well... The world is hell. All we can do is live." she looked up at Reyna, holding out a hand invitingly. "But you know, we could maybe be friends. One less person for the both of us to have to watch out for." -
Reyna chuckled coolly, not making an effort to take the other's hand. "Perhaps after I've known you for more than six months, but only then. I'm not an idiot."
She inspected Lydia once more. There was just something about the woman that said she had a second reason for everything she did; everything she said. This woman was definitely a puzzle, and Reyna would love to put that puzzle together, but in the back of an alleyway after Lydia had been tailing her...now was not the time for that. -
(Aw, come on! I rolled! Gotta go after dis'.)
Nikkili was ferocious and a bit crazy after the battle, licking his chops and giving a small but devilish grin. "Well, my fingers are great." Once he tried to move all his sinewy fingers, and they all looked fine, except for his left ring finger. "Dammit! That's what I write with..." He seemed to barely even notice he had been SHOT in the fore-arm. Strange.
He then looked sincere and awkwardly at Vivian. "Heh, Karma? For shooting people? Well... That's just right-out ironic." He added, his French accent returning. "I used to travel the way you are. Trying to sort things out with a pen in-stead of a gun. It lasted a little while, stored enough cash in a stock-pile to live off of for a couple years, might even say "made a living"."
Followed by "But then some ex-government con artist tried to over-throw me. It worked. Then I went bat-s--- crazy, became a serial killer, and killed him and his family. And his friends. And their families. Not sure about that last part." He then let out a wicked grin, and concealed it as he knew Vivian was becoming... Distant. "But kid, you don't know what I've done."
"Now, do you want the diplomatic assignment? Because so far, you are horrible out in the field." Nikkili stated, now walking out the back of the door.
