He kept his arm around her waiste, keeping her from falling. How he dreaded this day, in all his days of training her he knew it would be soon, but not this soon. He feared she'd never be prepared, therefore he never gave the young Hero a break, it was his duty to make sure she would have the skills to survive today.
Why did it have to be today? He still had so much to teach her, of course its only been twelve years, such little time for one naiad to learn so much, "Diana, are you okay?" -
IHLAOY NewbieA mass of black built up around the two, forming a wall, and a tunnel, and a light, and an exit. Thin wires, like a million webs of spiders, stretched between the abyss', tangling the walkers as they traveled.
"Shall I meet her soon?" Macaria asked, not bothering to glance at her companion.
"It is too late. She entered the bag without a regret. Not even Hades could pull her out now." Eraper replied.
"Shame. I have wondered what she was like. But I suppose that is the way of our people."
"Necromancers?"
"Correct."
"We are making more sense."
"I know, isn't it great?" Macaria replied.
The road sloped down suddenly, but the two continued on without a worry.
"Did you plan this?" Eraper asked.
"Define this."
"Your death."
"Death is inevitable, planning it is foolish." Macaria said.
"But you knew?"
"Knew my death?"
"Knew it would happen."
"Knew it was inevitable."
"Knew it had to happen."
"Hades is a god of death. You cannot defeat him from life alone." Macaria said.
"But you knew?"
"It was always my place, to be here. Did you think Demetria was going to do it?"
Stopping for a moment, Macaria looked around with fresh eyes. "I always knew it was going to happen. I was destined to die that day."
"This day."
"Is it?"
"Indeed."
"Time is odd."
"Doesn't work right?" Eraper asked.
"It is their place to make things right. It is mine to make sure it stays. No matter the cost. Through life or death, I must pay the cost."
"You have the coin then?"
Looking down at her hand, Macaria gripped the pitch black coin harder. And, with a slip of the thumb, sent it tumbling to the ground. "I won't need it. Not for this," And then she was running. There was much for her to do. -
Demetria could hardly stand up. How she was going to defend against darkness she wasn't sure. Diana woke up, but Macaria was still out. Demetria tried to push the thought of death out of her mind. Macaria couldn't be dead. Demetria panted. If it was this hard to stand, how was she going to use any magic? Burns and cuts covered her legs and arms.
Hades laughed. "You got up. Oh well. You don't have nearly enough energy defend against the powers of darkness. Why even try? Your deaths are determined. Thanatos will meet you in the underworld. You will die."
Demetria's foot slipped a bit in frustration. "Macaria," she said calmly. "Macaria. If you hear me right now I need your help. Please."
Hades raised his hand above his head. The ball of darkness grew. "It's almost ready little heroes." He grinned smugly. "It's futile to wake her up." -
IHLAOY Newbie(Nah, I'm done. I'm not having any sort of fun here. Macaria is a mary sue, the plot is moving at a snails pace, other issues I have. I'm out.)
"So we're agreed then." Atropos asked.
"It doesn't matter if we agree, there is no stopping you when you make a decision. You know this, I know this, it's all we've talked about for the last six years of my life. If you decide someone is going to die, then their twine is cut. No arguments."
"And yet you come. Came."
"As we agreed I would."
"So we are agreed then."
"As much as we will be." Macaria commented.
"A cut for a cut then? You will take her cut in place, and risk whatever is beyond?"
"Hey, I knew this was coming since the start. I'd die, she'd live, she'd save the world, I'd become a martyr. Simple."
The old hag stood up, pulling two thin threads out of the blackness around her. One was already cut in half, kept in place only by unseen force.
"Now is the time and here is the place. Let it be stated that the mortal Macaria gave much for the material realm, and that her time is finally up. Those gathered her watch as her twine is cut in place of another." She loudly proclaimed.
A pair of scissors appeared in the witches hands, and she floated them over to the broken string. With a loud snap, the pair closed upon each-other.
For a second nothing happened. In fact, nothing happened for several minutes. Macaria was already long gone. All that was left upon the table was an unclaimed coin for the toll, and a scrap of paper with timeless advice on it.
"I guess we've got this in the bag now." -
(M'kay. Not going to let that get me, or my character, down. Thanks for participating.)
Demetria sighed. She knew the truth about Macaria. She knew she wasn't going to wake. But that wasn't going to discourage her. "Hades." Her voice rang out. "You have limited power here, and you know that." Demetria was coming up with this on the spot, but it sounded vaguely familiar. Like she heard it before. "If you use a spell that will exterminate us, then you will be forced to leave or you will die again. Only, you may leave longer then last time. A couple thousand years, maybe?"
Hades scowled. The darkness he was casting flickered a bit, a sign that he was unfocused. -
"What did I tell you, Hades? I'm not alone." Diana taunted, sticking her tongue out at him. "Well, considering the circumstances, I'm not feeling all that great." She said in reply to Kaede, glaring at Hades. This guy was going to pay, god or not.
"Why even try?" The naiad laughed in reply to Hades. "Because, you murdered my father. You murdered Demetria's parent too. And Macaria. That is why I try. And you can not be sure that we will die, it is up to the Fates to determine that." She lifted her chin defiantly. As she was speaking, a water version of the darkness encasing Hades hand was forming around her own, which she held in front of her, pointed at the god. -
Demetria smiled when Diana finished speaking. "No one is alone. Ever. Except maybe you, Hades. You were assigned rule over the underworld, while your brothers, Zeus and Poseidon, got the sea and sky. You are cut off from the world. So if anyone's alone... It's you." Demetria said.
Demetria was about to summon a boulder when Hades unleashed his Darkness spell. Demetria closed her eyes, waiting for the endless darkness. But it never came. Instead, she felt something wrap around her arm. Demetria looked down and saw that a strand of darkness wrapped around her wrist. Then her wrist felt as it was burning. Demetria tried to keep a straight face at that point. Then the darkness retreated and a mark was in its place. It was creepy looking. It also looked vaguely like a circuit board. Demetria frowned. What was Hades up to?
(Search on google images: 'brands ff13' for the look of the mark
I got the idea of the mark from the game ff13) -
Diana nodded in agreement. "Yeah." She said, not being able to think of anything else to say. The water on her hand was beginning to move and twist, half frozen, into intricate patterns and shapes.
When Hades spell was unleashed, so was hers. With one hand, she drew the water inot a shield around her and Kaede, but as Demetria was too far away, Diana, in her energy sapped state, could only hope she was okay. Yet, still, a strand of darkness peirced the bubble, and circled around her wrist, leaving a strange mark there. Two can play that game, god boy. she thought.
With her other hand, a tendril of water moved towards Hades, and circled his wrist. She tried to make sure it hurt, that it was pain beyond pain. When it moved away there was a mark there. It was an eye, the lines marking the iris a triangle, instead of round, encased in a single drop of water. A mark that, by Naiad and Mermaid/Merman standards, meant that you were cursed. And she had cursed him, cursed him so that he knew she wished would go to the deepest pits of Tarturus, and stay there forever. -
((*she wished he would))
-
Hades brushed his hand over the mark and it disappeared. "Nice try, girl." Hades looked at everyone's wrists and grinned slyly. "You have been branded by the underworld. That mark on your wrist at this moment is your doom timer or lifespan. Right now it's just a collection of black lines, yes? Eventually though, a red circle will appear on it. Then a black circle will appear inside the red one. When the black circle, or 'eye', opens and glows white, you will die." Hades laughed. "This will happen over a long period of time so I can slowly watch you head towards your doom. But certain events can speed up the process. If something makes your strongly feel a negative emotion, like say, a friend dying." Hades gestured to Macaria's dead body. "The only way to stop it is to kill me. But I will be leaving now. I need to see how my palace has been."
Demetria scowled. "Why tell us all the information about these... Brands?"
Hades grinned. "So I you know that your death is near. So every day you wake up, you wake up to the threat of death. So you know that if you take too long, you're dead. Literally." Then Hades vanished. -
"I have a name, god boy. It's Diana. Diana Dekka Talent. I expect you to call me by it." Diana said through gritted teeth. If looks could kill, then Hades would be lying on the ground, and hole burnt through his face. Then she realised something. He doesn't understand the ways of the sea folk! If he did, he would know you can't just make their curses disappear. The mark is only to show the world. Once it is on your skin, the curse is fixed in place. Nothing he can do will change that, except my death. she thought. She'd have to find a way to use that to her advantage. She looked at Kaede. Her eyes widened slightly. "Uh... Kaede? Where's Iggy?" She asked. Hades could be lying about returning to his 'palace', and the younger sister and friend of two 'little heroes' would definitely make an effective hostage. She couldn't risk that.
-
He frowned, "Well I sent her to get the pelicans and she should be here by now...", his eyes widened as he caught onto Diana's thought, "No...Iggy is fine, she..she's somewhere, she's gotta be okay, she is okay", he said deternminately, trying to keep the panic away from his voice, though it was obvious in his trembling hands.
-
Diana grabbed his hands to still them. "Yeah...yeah, your right. She...she's fine. Don't worry." She said, half to him, half to herself. "The pelicans probably just told her to stay out of the forest...that's all." She looked up at him, and gave what she hoped was a reassuring smile, though her eyes told a different story. The ocean-blue pools were filled with fear. Fear and anxiety. Though she couldn't say she was as close to Iggy as Kaede, she thought she was a close second. She squeezed his hands, trying to keep her own from shaking.
-
He freed one of his arms and wrapped it around her shoulders, his other hand keeping hold of hers, in an effort to support her he found the bravery he needed to support himself. Diana, like Iggy was his responsibility, its his duty to protect both of them and make sure their okay. He gently squeezed her hand, "How about we look around?", he suggested, forcing his voice to stay stable
-
Diana nodded, not trusting herself to speak. The logical side of herself telling her that after what she had just faced, she shouldn't be so anxious. She was done listening to the logical side. She glanced at mark on her wrist. For some reason, she didn't really care about it, not when Iggy might be permanently missing from her life from this second on. She began walking towards where she remembered the beach to be, her bare feet unusually cold against the dirt. She lanced back at Demetria and smiled weakly.
