I got down stairs and appeared behind Mrs Newhouse, "Maa'm, may I help you set the table?"

"Oh, thank you," she responded. Max headed to the downstairs bathroom.

The table was set in a flash, every utensil, and piece of silverware. Perfectly straight, all of it, nice and neat. I always was good at doing that

He probably spent more time in there than he needed to.

I filled a jug with water, popping in some ice cubes. Just pretend that everything is normal and it will be...i-it was a trick of the eyes

He finally left the bathroom. "Any way I can help?" he asked his "mother," ignoring Alice.

Hearing him caught me off guard and I might have twisted the ice cube rack a bit too hard cause they popped and split on the floor, "Crap!", I shouted bending down to pick them up, "I mean um...sorry", I said in case his mum heard me, it'd be bad if I said such things in someone else's house

He helped, taking the ice cubes he picked up and tossing them in the sink. He didn't look at Alice.

"Thanks", I said mumbling into the simk as I tossed a handful inside. Everything is perfectly normal

Mrs. Newhouse didn't seem to notice the tension. "Maxwell's father is off on a... business trip, so we're going to be just us for the next two days."

"Really? Where's the trip to?", I asked sitting down at the table quickly

"Ahhh... Let's not talk about him, I want to learn about you." She handed one of the dishes to Max, and carried the other out herself. "Usually my husband cooks, so I'm sorry if your first meal here isn't as delicious as I'd like it to be."

"Don't worry, I'm not fussy", I smiled, "If you liked, I could help cook next time"

Max smirked as he set the plate on the table. He grabbed the phone afterward.
(Um...can I request that she does find the food disgusting once she tastes it?) -
(Alright)
I placed a forkful in my mouth and instantly wished I didn't. I shuddered from the horrendous taste but sent Max's mom a smile, "No, its very nice ma'am"
