Callum drummed his fingers against his thigh. He was absolutely crushed. He checked one last time before shutting his phone off. She was offline, probably indefinitely. He stood up and made his way through the crowd. He reached the back door. He slipped outside and sat on the back porch, staring up at the starry night sky.
-
When she felt she could cry no more, she dried her eyes and walked back out to the party. She mainly stayed near the snack table, listening to everyone else's conversations. She fanned herself with her hand, the room feeling warmer by the second.
-
He couldn't help but wonder who she was. It wasn't exactly fair for her to know who he was, but him to not have a clue of her identity. He scowled, pulling out his phone and turning it on. He checked the site yet again. She wasn't online. He didn't know if she'd ever get the message, but he sent it anyway.
I know you know who I am; I'm very sorry if you're disappointed. If you don't want to talk to me, I will definitely understand. I just want to find out why. Maybe we can sort things out. In person. Just think about it? -
Caroline felt her breathing get shallow, something was definatly wrong. She headed for the ack door, hopping some fresh air would help. It wasn't until she had closed the door, rather loudly, behind her that she realized who else was out there.
-
I turned around as I heard the door slam shut.
"Oh, hello Caroline," I gave her a small smile. I was afraid my sadness was showing through my eyes. I tried to suppress it, not sure if my efforts had worked. -
"Oh! H-hi Callum, how do you like the party so far?" Caroline asked, mind racing. What if he suspects me? What if he gets mad? I don't think I could handle anyone but my parents being mad at me, I'm used to that.
-
Callum shrugged. "It's just like any other, I suppose." He paused, pondering whether to continue or not. He decided against it, instead turning the conversation around. "How about you?"
-
"I guess it's not really my thing, but the conversations you overhear are pretty interesting." she replied, inwardly breathing a sigh of relief.
-
Callum chuckled lightly. "Yes, the conversations others uphold are rather intriguing..." He couldn't help but let his mind wander to CaIn, and how he'd never know who she was. He wondered if asking Caroline about it would be a good idea. She seemed like the supportive type. So why not give it a shot?
-
Caroline sat on the steps leading to the backyard, careful not to let her underwear show. She was right, the fresh was helping with her breathing. "Are you okay? You look like something's bothering you."
-
Callum sighed. "Yes, as a matter of fact, something is bothering me at the moment. But I shouldn't worry you with my problems..."
-
"It's fine, I'd love to help." she smiled, patting the spot next to her. Maybe if I tell him the best thing he can do is forget about it, he will.
-
Callum moved to sit next to Caroline. "You'll think I'm a bit of a fool, I'm afraid..." he started off, smiling nervously. "But I've met this girl online, she goes to our school. I honestly and truly think I'm in love with her. We resolved to meet tonight..." He frowned. "She said she would meet me over by the sofa, so I waited... She never showed up. And I'm wondering if it's because of me."
-
"Did she ever say anything that might indicate otherwise?" Caroline asked, "An allergy she might've run out of medication for? A sick family member in the hospital?"
-
Callum shook his head. "No, nothing of the sort." He stared at his hands. He let out a quick laugh, lacking happiness. "I was being stupid, wasn't I? The thought that I could meet her, that she could even be real? It was probably just a joke; a dare or something..."
