He smiled and ate a bit. "Oh, hey, I found this picture in my yard and it looked like something you'd draw." He opened his backpack and pulled out the picture of the young boy.

Maddy swallowed the bit of food she had been chewing and looked at the picture. "Oh my god... I thought I lost this forever..." Maddy hugged Akira. "This is... I mean... this was Max, my little brother."

"Aw, was?" He asked, more concerned.

"Yeah... When he was 3 he was diagnosed with juvenile leukemia... He died the day after his 5th birthday..." Maddy said, running her thumb along the picture of Max's face. "This is the last thing I have to remember him by..." she felt a single tear drip down her face.

He wiped her tear away. "Aw I'm so glad I found it then! Sorry to hear about your brother."

Maddy looked up at Akira and managed a sad smile. "Thanks. It was tough, but we got through it..." she paused. "I'm sorry, I'm just dumping this on your shoulders after all you've been through." She looked down at the ground.

He hugged her tight. "Maddy, you can always talk to me. I'm always here for you. It's no problem."

Maddy hugged Akira back. "Thanks, Akira. God, I'm so lucky to have you..."

Maddy smiled and picked up her tray. She was juts noticing that the lunch period was ending. "I think we both know that's not true..." she laughed and threw the remains of her lunch in the trash barrel. (notice, barrel. not can. XDD i'm weird)

Maddy raised her eyebrows. "I know that you know that we both know that your previous statement wasn't true..." She was starting to confuse herself. -

"Okay, sure." He smiled and took her hand. "English next, right?" -

Maddy held Akira's hand. "Yep..." They headed to their lockers and grabbed their books.
