Casimir grabbed their hand. Albert exhaled, grabbing a small vial and pouring liquid onto a spoon. ‘I don’t know, kid,’ he said, tilting the spoon so the liquid flowed into the old man’s mouth. ‘He’s still breathing, but his pulse is weak.’
-
Georgie exhaled shakily, silent tears rolling down their face. “God, what am I going to tell Mother, and the rest of my siblings-“ They spoke, their hands trembling violently.
-
Casimir didn’t know how to respond. He rubbed Georgie’s back, looking down. Albert kept his fingers on the man’s pulse, making sure he was still breathing. ‘We can take him to the hospital, but I don’t know what else we could do,’ Albert said, looking down at him.
-
Georgie nodded, wiping away stray tears. “Please- Do anything you can,” Rupert spoke, nodding.
-
Albert nodded. ‘Go get the stretcher,’ he told his assistant, who scrambled off. He hovered his hand above the man’s nose and mouth, making sure he could feel air coming out.
-
Georgie exhaled shakily, disassociating as they stared at the wall to try and forget about the situation at hand. They leaned into Casimir’s side, tears continuing to roll down their cheeks.
-
Casimir gently wiped their tears with his thumb. He kissed their forehead. As the assistant brought the stretcher, Albert’s face paled and his fingers searched for a pulse. ‘No no no, stay with us, sir-‘ he said quietly, moving his stethoscope to the man’s chest.
-
“No, no- f---, this can’t be happening-“ Rupert spoke shakily, moving to his father’s side and grabbing his hand. Georgie came back to reality, their heart racing as they watched in fear.
-
Albert kept his hand on the man’s pulse. He eventually took it off, then removed his hat. ‘I’m sorry,’ he said, looking down at the dead man. ‘He’s gone.’
-
Georgie froze in their spot, their heart practically stopping. “No, no, no he- he can’t be-“ Rupert spoke shakily, still holding onto his father’s hand.
-
Casimir looked down. Albert sighed. ‘I’m sorry, kid. But there was nothing we could do.’
-
Rupert exhaled shakily and nodded, tears rolling down his face as he quietly sobbed. He let go of his father’s hand reluctantly and moved over to Georgie, clinging to them. She exhaled and shakily hugged him close, trying to keep it together for him.
-
Casimir gently rubbed Georgie’s back. ‘Thank you, Albert.’ The doctor nodded and held his hat to his chest, staying silent.
-
Georgie stayed quiet as they hugged their brother close, disassociating as they stared at the wall. Rupert sobbed quietly into their chest, clinging to Georgie.
-
Casimir kissed the side of Georgie’s head, wrapping one arm around their torso and resting his other hand on Rupert’s back. ‘You okay?’ he asked softly, looking at Georgie.
