“No, I- I’m okay, I can eat later,” Karl said with a small smile, running a hand through his hair. “You should really go to sleep, though-“

“No, trust me, I’m gonna sleep until like, a couple hours before dinner, you gotta eat something,” Nick said softly. rubbing his face. “Just pick something, and I’ll go to bed-“

“Fine, I’ll eat another banana,” Karl said, giggling softly. “And I can get it myself, just tell me where it is-“ He grabbed his crutches, standing to his feet.

“Here,” Nick said, breaking one off of the bunch and handing it to Karl once he got there. “I’ll hang out with you for a little bit, if you don’t mind~”

“Oh my goodness,” Karl said, giggling softly. “Are you not exhausted?” He asked, sitting back down on the couch and setting his crutches beside him. He peeled the banana, hesitantly taking a bite of it.

“I am. I’m falling asleep right now.” Nick said with a giggle, rubbing his eyes. “But I will survive-“

Karl giggled, taking another bite. “How was work?” He asked softly, watching Nick with a small smile.

“Work?” Nick repeated, pausing. “Good, I guess. I mean, it’s work, so.”

Karl giggled, nodding. “That’s good,” he replied, humming softly. “Is the night shift different than the day shift?” He asked, mostly using this as a way to keep his mind occupied so he could eat, but also because he was curious.

“Uh, kinda,” Nick shrugged. “It’s a little easier because all the patients are asleep, but I’m not a night person, so it kinda sucks.”

“Mm, fair,” Karl replied, nodding as he subconsciously shifted closer to Nick. He took another bite of his banana, humming softly.

“And I swear the other nurses who are regular night shifters are just like, stupider,” Nick said in annoyance. “I don’t know how they do it, but-“

“Pfft-“ Karl giggled softly, watching Nick with a small smile. “What do you mean by that?” He asked, chuckling softly.

Nick paused, blinking a little bit. “Like- like they don’t know how to do their f---ing job, and they’re lucky that I’m there-“

Karl giggled, taking another bite of his banana as he watched Nick. “So, you’re like, the best nurse or something, huh~?” He teased, nudging his leg with his foot.
