Selene gave a tired smile back. "Did you run into your parents in the village today?"

'Yeah. W- I left before they could see me.'

Selene caught the stutter, giving her a weird look.

Mahina matched her look.

"Who'd you go to the village with?" Selene asked in that tone parents use when they know you're busted, and want to see if you'll tell the truth, or just lie more.

'No one,' Mahina said almost immediately.

Selene raised her eyebrows. "Really?"

'Yep.'

Selene wasn't quite sure she believed Mahina, but let her lie, figuring as long as she didn't do anything stupid around whoever it was, like show them magic, it wasn't her business.

Mahina changed the subject when Selene didn't argue, trying not to think about Ernest hiding in her room. 'So, where were you?'

"Arguing with your parents. And then clearing my head by going for a walk." Selene shrugged.

'Arguing about what?'

"Who's going to take you." Selene admit.

Mahina huffed. 'Can't I choose?'

Selene thought about that. "I want your opinion, but I doubt they'll care much." She shrugged. "I'm sorry."
