Ernest smiled. "So, what do you want me to show you?"

‘Hmm. Maybe I can turn your dad into a toad.’

Ernie laughed. "Sure, if I can even find him." He wasn't totally against Mahina doing it, other than her potentially getting caught by the townspeople.

‘Do people hate witches here?’ she asked in a quiet voice.

Ernest gave a small nod. "All the villages do, but this one is more... Outspoken about it. At least, it was last time I was here." He looked at her apologetically. "I'm sorry."

Mahina sighed. ‘It’s fine,’ she mumbled. She moved closer to Ernest.

"Hey, it's alright." Ernie moved so he could see her eyes. "I won't let them do anything to you. Promise."

You can’t stop them. But Mahina forced a smile. ‘Alright,’ she said quietly.

Ernest could tell it was a fake smile. "I'm serious! I'll hit them all over the head with my books. Knock them out really fast." He pat his bag with a chuckle.

Mahina laughed quietly. ‘Thank you.’

"You're welcome." Ernie smiled. "Come on, lets look at the shops. Are you hungry?" He only had a coin left but didn't mind using it on her.

Mahina nodded. ‘A little,’ she admitted.

"Alright. Want a pastry, or actual food?"

‘I don’t mind.’

"Alright." Ernie took her into a pastry shop, opening the door for her.
