Jayd walked around the halls of the castle, looking for someone to talk to, preferably Chester.
-
His father looked down at Chester, who was kneeling in the dirt. Chester glanced up at him. 'Father.'
'Son.'
They just stared at each other for a moment. Eventually, Chester stood up and straightened his suit. He put his hand out, and his father's fingertips met his. It was like an icy breeze, one Chester knew too well.
'Is.. is Mother there?'
His father nodded. -
Jayden walked into Chester's room looking under the bed. Sure enough, the diary was there. He chuckled.
-
Tears welled in Chester's eyes. He looked down. 'I've done a horrible thing.'
His father cupped his cheek in his hand. It wasn't a pleasant sensation, being touched by the dead, but Chester leaned into his touch. 'We know, son. News travels fast here. I suspect you're here asking for our forgiveness? So it won't affect your chances in heaven?'
Chester shook his head. 'No, I deserve every bit of punishment.' -
Jayden debated between grabbing the diary and reading it before deciding against it-for now. Might as well ask Chester later. If they both wanted to talk to each other still. He sat down on Chester’s bed.
-
His father didn't look taken aback. 'A noble thing to do.'
Chester laughed dryly. 'If anything, I'm not noble, father. I'm in love with the human king. You don't find anything wrong with that?'
The old man just smiled. 'I fell in love with a peasant, son. That's the lowest of the low.' He flinched, and must've been whacked by his wife. 'It was a joke, Mellie!'
Chester gave a weak smile. 'Do you think he'll ever trust me again?' -
Jayd laid down on his back, staring up at the ceiling. The silence was really getting on his nerves by now. “Oh Maeeeeve, if you’re listening, you should entertain me.” He called out into the nothingness. He didn’t get a response.
-
His father smiled. 'I'm sure he will, son. Love never has a happy ending.'
Chester raised an eyebrow. 'Why not?'
'Because it never ends. King Jayden will come around.'
'I think that's the cheesiest thing you've ever said.'
His father just chuckled. 'Our time is almost up, son. Anything else you wanted to say?'
Chester shook his head. 'No.'
'Alright. Stay safe for me and your mother. We love you.'
'Love you too, father.' -
Chester’s dad smiled before slowly disappearing, leaving Chester all alone in the garden.
-
Chester stared his father's gravestone for a moment. He picked a rose from a bush and set it on the ground in front of it. He wiped his eyes, which had started to well, and stood there till he felt calm enough to walk back to the castle. He entered his room.
-
Jayden noticed him walk in. “Hi.” He said quietly, giving a small smile.
-
Chester glanced at him. So, maybe Jayden didn't completely hate him. 'Hey, dar-' he cut himself off, blushing. 'Sorry.' He shut the door and took one of the truth pills.
-
“It’s ok.” Jayden said quietly, looking up at him.
-
Once Chester had taken the pill, he lay next to Jayden. 'Do you hate me?'
-
Jayd shook his head. “I don’t hate you. I hate what you did, and I don’t trust you nearly as much, but I don’t hate you.” He mumbled.
