"Oh, that sucks that you couldn't go!" Jonah said, wondering why she couldn't go, but also knowing it wasn't necessary for him to know.
-
"yeah, I was supposed to see this exhibit called Omega mart. It's supposed to be a grocery store where everything is weird. It was gonna be really cool." Valako said she remembered how popular the promotional material got, to the point people called it an arg
-
"That sounds so cool!" Jonah exclaimed. "That sucks that you weren't able to go."
-
"yeah. I was really mad at the time I just about charged into town without my mask to walk to the airport." Valako said. She rubbed the skin where her eye would be under the veil.
-
"Yeah, I bet." Jonah said with a sympathetic smile.
-
"yeah, it made that monster rumor even worse though." Valako said. She remembered how people screamed when she walked into town. She was only brought back to her senses when someone threw a brick on that day.
-
"Oh man, that's horrible." Jonah said, his smile quicky fading. "That sounds awful."
-
"it's... not that bad. It stopped me from getting stranded on the side of some highway somewhere. It wasn't the best thing though. I think I still have a scar from that day." Valako said
-
Jonah's eyes widened. "You got a scar from it, and it's 'not that bad'? Do you realize how horrible that is?"
-
"I can't say it was okay but I can say it stopped me from getting lost even if I was hurt." Valako wondered when she started trying to vouch for the people in the town but she'd always tried to make them seem less... evil sounding
-
"Either way that's awful." Jonah said quietly. "I mean, why would anyone do that to someone?"
-
"It was fear. I understand that people are afraid of me. It's not the worst thing." Valako said. Even if she said there was something wrong with it. It wouldn't make a difference, it would make everything harder for her
-
"Not the worst thing?" Jonah said in disbelief. He knew there was some old timey quote that said it was better to be feared than loved, but he certainly didn't believe it. "Then what is?"
-
"well, let me put it into perspective. Would you rather be a person living on the edge of the woods because people fear you, or be hated and attacked for no reason." Valako said. She held her hand over the face deformity that practically ruined her life since birth.
-
"People shouldn't hate people for no reason." Jonah said. "I suppose being feared is better, but both options are horrible." He said quietly, looking into Valako's eye.
