Javas watched the people walking back and forth on the street. They all had places to go. He wished he could bring himself to give the other homeless kids a place to go, but he couldn't stand to stay in that apartment. He thought about living alone in the alley and letting the kids stay there but then, no one would be looking after them properly... And they could break something. It hurt him to be this selfish, but he felt he couldn't bring himself to stop.
-
Aria wrapped her arms around herself as they made their way back to where there were staying. They were a surprising number of people out for walks on this chilly night.
-
Javas turned off the flashlight when they got to the alley and let go of Aria's hand. "Someday maybe I will let everyone go to 'my apartment.'" Javas said with air quotes.
-
Aria gave a small smile and wandered over to the tent. She gave a small wave.
-
"goodnight Aria." Javas said before crawling into his tent and placing the flashlight back beside Patrick.
-
Aria smiled but didn't reply. She slowly got in the tent careful not to wake Mia who was sleeping peacefully.
-
Javas fell asleep easily. Visiting the apartment did that. That night he had a dream where he was at the top of Mount Everest. He stared down and tried to spot his home but all he could see were clouds and rocks. It felt underwhelming.
-
Aria lay silent but awake, thinking over what had happened that day. She shivered slightly though it wasn't that cold.
-
In Javas' dream, he looked to the left. There was nothing. He looked to the right. nothing was there either. Then he fell backwards and woke up.
-
Aria lay awake for a long time, feeling incredibly restless.
-
When Javas woke up, he decided to leave the tent. It was time for him to get breakfast right before everyone else woke up. He worried about how fresh the food would be but he couldn't afford to complain. At the current moment, he was trying to convince everyone to save up because if there was one thing children could do for work it was mowing lawns and shoveling snow. All he had to do was buy some shovels and they'd have a job in the winter. Then when he finally got a "real" job everything would start falling into place for them. They'd get better food and eventually they'd get a house and they'd be safe from rain and snow and they'd start getting furniture and soon enough they'd practically have their own safe house for homeless kids like them.
-
Aria heard the sound of a zip, and the sound of heavy winds rustling through the sky. She tucked her knees up to her chest and sighed, wondering what time it would be now.
-
Javas walked to the dumpster of the fast food buffet. It smelled like hot death but he knew he'd still have to look through. The Dunkin's employees would still be policing the trash cans to keep him away at that time.
