“Stranger than Land of the Freaks?” Eli asked in disbelief.

'Strange in a different way,' Callum said. 'Like, people are mean for fun, potato chips are harshly expensive.'

“Are potato chips free where you’re from or something?” Eli asked half jokingly. “And yeah, a lot of people suck here.”

'Well, kinda!' Callum laughed. 'They do. I still can't believe a guy tried to beat your up.'

Eli shrugged. “It happens a lot.” They said. “It’s normal.”

'It's not normal, it's cruel!' Callum protested.

Eli shrugged again. “Just because it’s normal doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s just happened so much I’m used to it I guess,”

'That's even worse,' Callum said, frowning.

“I suppose so.” Eli agreed. “But what am I supposed do about it?”

'Stand up for yourself? Tell some adult?'

“Stand up for myself, sure, but not tell an adult.” Eli said. “Tried that once, it just ended up with me getting beaten up after school.”

'Oh,' Callum said. 'Fight back, then?'

“Yes, one tiny kid verses the 6 foot monstrosity that picks on me every day. I wonder how that would turnout.” Eli said with a laugh, but a hollow laugh, without humor. “It’s a good idea in theory, but in practice I’d wind up in a coffin.”

Callum's expression turned from sour to sympathetic. 'You shouldn't have to go through that.'

Eli shrugged again. “It is what it is I guess. It’s normally not too bad, just a punch in the stomach and then it’s over with, nothing too horrible.”
