"You get your parents back and the shadow doesn't try and destroy the Land of the Freaks ever again."

'And how do you propose we do that?'

Eli thought of their next words very carefully to try and make sure to not make Callum feel worse. "Well, maybe if we check the last place your parents were, then we could try and look for clues to find them."

'I've done that. Found nothing.'

"Then we could follow the shadow around. Or... You won't like this, but maybe I could use myself as bait to try and find out where the shadow takes the stuff- or at least, what it does with them."

'Absolutely not,' Callum said, horrified by the idea. 'I'm not losing you too!'

"But what if that's our only chance of seeing what it did with them?" Eli protested. "I'm willing to risk it. Besides, it'd be my fault, not yours."

'No way. If anyone's being bait, it'll be me.'

"No!" Eli protested. "You're the one that can go from the normal world and back. If you got lost I'd be stranded here, or maybe even kicked out. It's not practical."

'But what if you never return?!'

"And what if YOU never return?!" Eli countered, folding their arms.

'It wouldn't change much. You've got a family to go back to.'

"It won't matter. If you die then I won't be able to go back to them anyway. Plus I'd probably die of grief."
