Echo hid her maps in a drawer and opened one of her books to standing page, pretending to be reading. 'Enter,' she called, eyes glued to the page she'd already read twice.

Carol sighs again, then opens the door. "may i sit?" she asks, and then sits on Echo's bed before waiting for an answer. "ok, before you get mad at me, i just want to say something. i only did this because i was thinking about your future."

'My future?' Echo said, raising an eyebrow. 'Right...'

"well..." she continues "i've set you up in an arranged marriage... you'll meet him soon, i've invited him over to take you in a few days."
(that just sounds creepy lol, like she's being kidnapped) -
(yeah lmao)
Echo said nothing for a moment, just stared at her mother, gobsmacked. She was for once stricken dumb by this news, and it took her a few seconds to recover herself.
'W-WHAT?!' she shouted standing up. -
Carol says nothing, just stares at her daughter calmly while she waits for her to figure out what to think of the situation

'Why would you do that without even asking me?!' Echo shouted, face growing slightly red with anger.

"it's for your own good." Carol states, as calm as an old person in a lazy river. "you won't get anywhere without marrying this boy, and this family is going through some financial problems. we need the money and he's got loads."
(i might disappear soon bc i'm tired so i might pass out at the keyboard) -

'What financial problems?!' Echo shouted, balling her fists. 'We're a family of three! And I haven't even met this man, he's probably 10 years older than me!' -
"actually, he's only 6 years older than you. now, i would appreciate it if you wouldn't raise your tone toward me young lady." Carol seems unfazed by the whole situation, even though it is a pretty serious thing going on

Echo let out a sharp exhale and sat back down, jaw clenched. 'Have you no guilt?!' she snapped. 'You're about to ruin my life fo-for money!'

"think of your future!." she raises her voice a bit. not quite a shout, but it's a bit louder than regular speaking. "this is what's best for you."

Echo sat back in her chair, eyes glassing over. 'I-I...' she stuttered. She let out a shaky sigh and turned away, back to her mother.

"i'd advise you get some fresh air. i'm going to look for a dress for you for when you meet your future husband. it's very important that you look your best." Carol leaves the room and shuts the door behind her

Echo glanced back to the door, then back at her book. An idea crossed her mind, a wicked, wicked idea. But it was the only one she had.
She grabbed a large leather bag from under her bed and packed three books and all her maps, as well as a box of matches and slung it over her shoulder. She then opened the window and crouched on the sill, looking down at the world below her. With a small smile she jumped and landed on her feet, then ran.
