Nik looked at the floor, obviously very upset. “Adopted already?” He asked, not really expecting an answer.
-
'I'm sorry,' Leo said quietly.
-
“It’s not your fault.” Nikolai said, before looking at Ming. “They didn’t adopt you?” He asked, not even realizing how insulting the question could be.
-
Ming shook her head, her bottom lip quivering. Her eyes had glassed over. Leo put an arm around her.
'They said it would be too traumatic for Nat, or whatever,' he said. -
“That’s stupid!” Nik said just a bit too loudly, kneeling down. “Wouldn’t that make it even more traumatic?”
-
'Exactly,' Leo shrugged. 'I dunno. But now they've gone to the city, and there's nothing we can do about it.'
-
Nikolai groaned in frustration, sitting all the way down and deciding he might as well stay and try to keep Leo and Ming company, and besides, it was better than going back to his house anyway.
-
'Ming, why don't you go play with the other kids?' Leo asked the little girl.
'Why?'
'So Nik and I can talk.'
Ming pouted. 'Fine.' She walked over to the other children about her age. -
Ming barely even talked to the kids, and Nik did a half chuckle.
“Wow, she’s such an extrovert.” He said sarcastically. -
'More of an ambivert,' Leo chuckled. 'When she came here and started talking to me, she wouldn't shut up about her family.'
-
“That’s adorable.” Nikolai said, grinning.
-
'It was,' Leo agreed. His smile grew smaller. 'Are you alright? About Nat, I mean.'
-
Nikolai’s smile faded. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He lied.
-
'Are you sure?'
-
Nikolai hesitated before nodding, not trusting himself to repeat it.
