"It has been much over twenty," Mr. Brierton growled at her.
"Father what's going on?" Josiah asked, looking confused.
Mr. Brierton straightened up, his hostile expression escaping immediately. "Nothing," he said. "Continue unpacking." -
Arianna shot Josiah a gleeful grin as if to say, ‘everything's all right.'
-
Josiah could tell that it wasn't okay,.but since he hadn't actually seen anything he couldn't do anything. He stood there for a few moments, then went back upstairs.
-
"Am I going to be punished?" Arianna asked wearily once Josiah was back upstairs. "I probably deserve it, to be honest."
-
"Not now," he said. "Go clean the stable."
-
Arianna gave him a grateful smile and curtsied. She hurried off the the stables to clean out the manure and filthy hay.
Grabbing a shovel from one of the sheds, she opened up the stable door to a horse named, 'Clarino.'
The horse wasn’t in there at the time, so Arianna figured that he was being trained. Without delay, the determined girl started shoveling out the horse dung. -
Josiah, when he was done, was craving a ride. He went out to the stables, where he found his white horse, Pheonix. He saw Arianna there.
"I thought you told me he treated you well," he said, coming up behind her. -
"He did what he had to do," Arianna muttered. "I am a servant. I shall be treated like one."
-
"Servant or not, no one should be looking at my father in fear," Josiah said. He walked over to Phoenix's stall and pulled out his horse.
-
That sentence filled Arianna's heart with such a heated warmth that it completely melted her soul.
"That is a very generous thing to say, sir Josiah." Arianna chuckled. -
"They say you can judge a man based on the way he treats his servants," he said. He put the saddle on his horse, then got on. "I'm starting to wonder if I've misjudged my father my whole life."
-
"That's no way to think," Arianna said as she laid the shovel on the ground. "I'm sure he's a great man. He just might be really strict."
-
"Being strict and instilling fear are two different things," Josiah said. And with that, he rode out of the stable.
-
Arianna was left alone with nothing but Josiah's words and her own thoughts. He wasn't wrong, being strict and instilling fear were two completely different things.
She sighed and stroked Clarino's beautiful white man lovingly. At least the horses seemed to be free. -
Josiah also was lost in his own thoughts. All his life he had looked up to his father. He was very strict, but never to this point. He knew he hadn't seen much, but has his father ever hit her? No, he wouldn't.
Clarino nuzzled her.hand as if asking her for something.
