"That should be no problem at all! I'm exceptional at house chores and gardening. I'm fairly well with working on farm chores" Arianna grinned, all of her shame disappearing rather quickly.
-
"You'd better be," Marvin muttered under his breath.
A couple hours later they arrived at a small farm.
"Your room will be in the attic," Abigail said. "You can go get settled. You'll start working tomorrow." -
"Thank you, mister and miss." She smiled. Arianna brought her bags up the stairs and into the attic.
The attic was covered in cobwebs. Rats scattered across the floor quickly, either plain or hidden from anybody's sight. A few wooden boards were loose.
Arianna flinched and made her way to the bed. Its mattress was filthy and covered in stain marks. When she sat on top of it, it was as if Arianna were sitting on a rock. And not a smooth one, a hard, uncomfortable one.
"I... can work with this." Arianna said with a weak smile. "All it needs is a bit of decorating. Nothing I, Arianna Glowell, can’t do!" -
The next day, Abigail left to go visit her sister.
As soon as his wife was out of sight, Mr. Brierton turned to Arianna with a steely gaze.
"I'm going to set some ground rules right now," he said. "You're not to act improperly in any manner. You will do exactly what I say when I say it. If you ever slip up, it'll be the worse for you." -
Arianna looked at her new master with innocent eyes. She gripped the sides of her dress and dipped down into a curtsy.
“Yes, sir. I'll do my best to serve you." Arianna said politely. "Is there anything you want me to do for you today? Perhaps cook some breakfast or tend to the garden?" -
"Both," he said.
Over the next couple weeks, he worked her probably harder than she could handle. And every time she messed up on even the littlest things, he hit her.
A few weeks later Mr. Brierton approached Arianna. "Josiah is coming back today," he told her. "I want you on your best behavior. -
Arianna lifted a weary eyebrow. Josiah? Who could that be? A special guest?
"If it isn't too bothersome to ask you, sir," Arianna began, wincing a little. "Who is Josiah?" -
¨june get ur butt on Q¨ said Eri
-
"My son," Mr. Brierton said. Before he could continue, there was a knock on the door. "Go up into the attic and make yourself look decent." he said. He walked over to open it, because he knew exactly who it was. His whole demeanor changed from cold and cruel to warm and welcoming.
A tall boy just a bit older than Arianna walked through the door with a lopsided smile on his face. "Hello father!" he said cheerfully. -
Arianna bit her lip in worry and trudged up the stairs. She only had one good, but shabby dress. It was a white dress that had a small rip in the back of it. It wouldn't be noticeable if Arianna let her hair down, but there was a risk of it ripping even further.
Still, wanting to obey and look her best, Arianna reluctantly slipped the dress on. She buckled on some black ballet flats and made her way down the stairs. -
(Oh boy.
It was very informal to let your hair down back then. You always, ALWAYS did your hair. You could get away with a half ponytail or if you had a hair ribbon in it, but not just plain loose.)
Mr. Brierton's eyes caught Arianna. His eyes narrowed at her loose brown curls. "Come here," he commanded.
Josiah turned to look at who he was talking to. He saw a girl about his age with long brown curls. She looked like she would be very pretty if she wasn't so ragged.
"Who're you?" he asked. -
(OH DANG-)
(In that case, I would never survive that timeline. 💀)
(Poor Arianna tho- I probably messed her life up.)
Arianna gave Josiah a quick, small respectful bow before walking over to her boss. She flashed him a big grin as if to say, 'don't I look stunning?' -
Mr. Brierton set her with a glare.
Josiah realized that the girl wasn't going to answer his question. "Father, who is she?"
His hostile demeanor melted off into a more cordial one. "This is Arianna. She'll be serving us for a few years." -
Arianna quickly noticed the tense look Mr. Brierton had given her. She pondered over what could've made him so terribly upset. As she did so, her finger sneaked up to one of her strands of hair and started twirling the strand around itself. It was only then when Arianna realized how rude she must've come off as.
She slipped a hand into a shallow pocket in her dress and took out a band to tie her hair with. When she thought nobody was looking, Arianna briskly tied her hair up into a circular bun.
It wasn't the style she liked. In fact, it bothered her a lot. But being polite was Arianna's top priority. -
(They didn't have hair ties back then lol they used pins and ribbons)
Josiah observed her. She didn't look like she had been treated well. He wondered what it was from. He had always known his father to be a kind man. But the way he was looking at her, he wasn't so sure anymore.
"Arianna," Mr. Brierton said, "put a pot of tea on."
