Asteria was doubled over in laughter. She had to lean on Carlos so that she didn't fall over. She had to wipe her eyes of tears so that she could see properly.
-
"THIS. IS. NOT. FUNNY.” Martino growled, his eyes instantly flicking towards the two people who were guffawing. “WHAT DID YOU TWO DO?!”
-
"We - We put the spicy stuff in the soup," Asteria said, taking a breaks in between words and phrases to laugh, "which we knew you might expect since -since we showed it to you before." Another bout of laughter came out of her, but she finally started to calm down. "And so I suggested that since it was so spicy, when you went for the glass of milk, it wouldn't be milk it would be cornstarch water! Which not only is disgusting but it doesn't help with spiciness at all!"
Asteria took another look at Quince's red face and couldn't help but let out another snicker. -
Martino's dark red face rivaled that of Quince. He resisted the strong urge to waltz over to Carlos and Asteria and slap them into the next country. Instead, he pinched the bridge of his nose with his white glove and breath out a gush of air through his clenched teeth. Finally, after a silent moment, Martino looked up at the chaotic pranksters.
"There will be consequences for your reckless behaviour,” he coldly informed them. His face was blank and his gaze as hard as a stone as he stared them down. "Do you understand?”
Through strangled chokes and heavy wheezes, Quince managed to grab the sleeve of Martino.
“L-leave it, it's fine." He gasped, more coughs coming out. "However, little Ms. Mischevious must stay here even longer as a punishment.” -
Asteria took a few breaths to calm herself before looking at Quince with a confused look. "You never even said how long I'd be staying here in the first place. You can't add to it if it never existed in the first place."
Asteria was suddenly vividly aware of Carlos next to her. What was going through his head.listening to this? She was sure he'd have questions.
And would it be that every time she acted out against Quince she'd have to stay here longer? How long would it be until he finally let her go? How long until she was free again? -
(KSKWJWJ I FORGOT HAV AND CARLOS WERE THE SAME PERSON-)
(Oh man this is giving me Axel vibes-. Quince pls stay sane we’re not having another Axel in this rp 🙏)
“Um, sorry if I’m barging into a private personal moment, but what do you mean by added time?" Carlos asked with raised eyebrows. He had just thought that Asteria was a guest of Quinces', not a hostage. No, no! He mustn't think that his boss could do such a dark, horrible thing.
A chill ran down his spine. What was going on here?
Martino coughed and stared at Quince with a knowing gaze. He tipped his head down and then bounced it forwards as a signal to come up with a believable lie. "Yes, Sir Quince, won't you tell him about your… guest?"
Quince blinked his red eyes three times, a hot tear trekking down his cheek every time. He was almost recovered from the dreadful prank that was pulled on him.
"Oh, that?" Quince muttered with a small, refined smile. "She is just repaying a debt she owes me. And Asteria, darling, have you not found your stay in this mansion to be satisfactory? We have given you a room that not even five star suites could compete with. You are given food with just the snap of a finger. We have not taken away any privileges other than your rights to leave this household. Might there be any reason you feel discomfort? Do you not want to stay here?”
“Wait, wait! Debt? What debt?” Carlos exclaimed as he wagged his hands in the air as if it could satisfy his need for an answer.
"Shut it, filth.” Martino hissed. Carlos lowered his hands and backed down, but stayed looking like a kicked puppy. -
"I don't want to talk about this," Asteria muttered loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. She stalked away, out of the room. She wanted to be alone.
She tried to find her way back to her room, but couldn't. She wasn't sure how much time she spent wandering the halls of the mansion, completely lost, before she just sat down in a random corner and curled up. -
"A..Asteria, wait!" Carlos yelled as he stretched out his hand to where she had exited the room. Determined to help her with whatever she was going through, he hastened towards the exit of the dining hall. However, a sharp voice rang out.
"Leave it, Carlos. She's been through enough." Quince snapped as she stirred the square ice cubes in his water with his paper straw. His voice was laced with guilt. "Martino, wait twenty minutes and then go check on her."
"But, Sir, I-!"
Quince glowered at his butler. "I said to wait twenty minutes and then check on her. Have I not made myself clear? Or perhaps have you decided to go back to living on the streets with peasant rags for your clothing, Martin."
Martino bowed his head respectfully, grating his teeth against each other in a seething rage. "Yes, master." -
It hadn't even been a day. She hadn't even spent the night yet. And she hated this place already. She didn't want to be here any longer. She wanted to go back to the way her life had been before. She should have never gone to that party. She should have insisted to Roxy that she hadn't wanted to come.
How long would she be there for? How long would he keep here here against her will? If she left, she'd be arrested, Quince would call the police on her, and quite frankly, a gilded prison was better than an ordinary one.
Why had that been the only thing Quince would accept from her, was for her to stay there? How come he had lengthened how long she was supposed to stay when she did something he didn't like? What was in this for him? What did he want from her? -
The time had struck twenty minutes, and so Martino left the room in search for Asteria. He wandered around the long corridors for what felt like hours, but could be interpreted as five minutes. Finally, just as he was about to turn the corner of another endless hallway, he spotted out of the corner of his eye the one person he was instructed to look for. With a small sigh, he squatted down next to her and planted a blank look on his face. People don’t accept pity. Sympathy isn’t welcome in unfortunate situations such as these.
“Life is almost as confusing as mapping out this mansion, no?” Martino said, trying to stir up a conversation. -
Asteria looked up at Martino with a suspicious look. So far he hadn't been very kind to her. He was probably going to offer her to take her back to her room then get her even more lost.
"I guess you could say that," she said in response. -
"I made the map with nothing but a pencil and my bare hands. It was a difficult feat." Martino said with a fond smile on his face as he thought about the memory. The long, dreary hours he spent trying to draw the perfect lines and curves to make the map perfect. It took him two weeks to complete such a small task. How foolish of him.
However...
"Sir Quince told me about how you got here. He said you took a priceless artifact. Is that true? The young master can be a bit dramatic at times." -
Asteria swallowed. "It was a little trinket bowl," she said. She didn't know if she could trust Martino with this information, but she felt like she didn't really have a choice. "I'm a - I'm a klepto. I knew it was wrong but I couldn't do anything to help it. Quince caught me trying to return it and it was either stay in here or be sent to jail."
-
Martino's eyes shot up to his forehead. He knew she had stolen something that couldn't be replaced easily, but for it to be Quince's bowl was... surprising.
Suddenly, he burst out in laughter, his obnoxious voice booming throughout the hallway. He took a small handkerchief out of his pocket and wiped the corner of his eyes.
"I knew Sir Quince was stupid, but not this idiotic." Martino chuckled. "I bet he doesn't even look understand what kleptomania is! Please don't take what the young master says to heart, Asteria. He has a hard time keeping up with threats. You'll be out of this mansion lickety split." -
Asteria looked at him with an extremely confused look. "Why are you being nice?" she asked. "You hate me for no apparent reason, last I checked."
