"Oh no," Aster whispered as she covered up her big grin with her hand.
-
"Shhh, shhh!" Carlos hissed at her with a smile. "Don't give us away!"
Once he gave a spoon full of mango pickle to Quince, Carlos gave his boss an angelic smile.
"Bon appetite!"
Quince raised a suspicious eyebrow and shoved the whole spoon into his mouth. His calm composure melted away completely as Quince’s face turned bright red. -
Asteria burst out laughing. She couldn't believe that was how she had looked when she had been given it.
-
Carlos just about died on the spot. His loud bellows of laughter could be heard by everybody in the mansion.
Martino rushed into the kitchen, appalled at the sight of his boss practically dying because of the hot spices.
"HAVE YOU FOOLS KILLED HIM?" Martino screamed, firmly hitting Quince on the back.
"No, we poisoned him." Carlos snorted.
"MY GOD!" -
"It's just some spicy food," Asteria said. She took the same glass from before and filled it with water. She handed it to Quince.
"I guess this isn't going into supper for tonight," she said. -
(The same glass, eh? 👀)
Quince snatched the glass of water from Asteria and gulped it down hastily. The red in his face faded away a bit, but a little remained.
"You two are in so much trouble," Quince chuckled dangerously. "I'll get you back."
"Uh-oh," Carlos said with a smirk. "He's going to try pranking us and then fail miserably."
"Excuse me, master is very good at his mischievous shenanigans!" Martino snapped, glaring at the cook angrily.
“Uh, excuse you? Do you even remember the 'Halloween Chainsaw' prank? Sir Quince almost got the cops called on him!" Carlos retorted.
"Now that," Quince shook his head in embarrassment. "Was an accident. Asteria, don't listen to that idiot."
“At least this idiot can pull off pranks successfully."
"Oh, get over yourself!" Martino huffed. -
"I don't know, there was plenty of evidence that the contents of the jar was spicy," Asteria said. "In my peripheral, while I was jumping up and down for the water, I saw you in the doorway. The only foods near us were the onions, and the jar of the spicy mango stuff, which is in plain slight. Which do you think I would be reacting to?"
-
"The onions," Quince muttered.
-
Asteria raised her eyebrows. "Wow, I've never been exposed to raw onions before, it's so spicy even though onions really aren't spicy!"
-
"Actually, I find them to have quite the hot taste." Martino retorted.
"Martino, those are bitter, not spicy. How many times do I have to tell you?" Carlos sighed with a small facepalm. "B, i, t, t, e, r."
"You should be a cheerleader, Hav.” Quince smirked. -
"And you should be a clown," Asteria glared at Quince. "Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to figure out a different surprise to put in your supper tonight."
-
Quince raised his hands in surrender.
“All right, then. You two get to it. I seriously can't wait to see what you guys come up with." He chuckled before shooting a look at Martino. "Martino, you supervise them."
“You make it sound like we’re toddlers who need a babysitter!" Carlos whined. “Why Martino of all people?”
“Because I'm the most mature servant out of everybody here," Martino declared proudly, raising his head up.
“More like the most stuck-up servant," Carlos whispered to Asteria with a small smirk. -
She giggled at that because of how true it was.
"How long have you been working here, exactly?" she asked Carlos. -
"13 years of dedicated service-"
“Martino, she was talking to me.” Carlos cut off the butler with a small eye roll and turned back to Asteria with a smile. “Around 13 years, like Martino. Both he and I started working here at quite the young age." -
"I was going to say, you guys don't look that old," she said. "I think after 13 years he's been deemed trustworthy to not put anything harmful in the food," she said, looking at Martino.
Suddenly something struck her. "Ooh! I have an idea!" she said, suddenly looking very excited. She had an idea for something they could use as a surprise for Quince's meal. She stood on her tiptoes to whisper in Carlos' ear, but her head only came to his chin. "You're too tall," she said. She took him by the arm and pulled him down to her level. She whispered something in Carlos' ear, covering her hand over the conversation so that Martino couldn't hear.
"Cornstarch mixed in water looks exactly like milk," she whispered.
