Harlow nodded. "I sometimes wonder what my parents were like," he admitted quietly.

"Who raised you then?" Coraline said, glancing at Harlow.

"I raised myself," he answered simply.

"Since you were how old?" Coraline said, confused.

"I don't remember," Harlow said honestly. "Maybe they were able to take care of me long enough until I was able to sufficiently able to take care of myself, I just don't know."

"What was it like?" Coraline said. "Living on your own for so long."

"Lonely," Harlow said, looking at the ground.

"What about friends? You must have had friends," Coraline insisted.

"I had...acquaintances," Harlow said. "But no friends."

Coraline nodded in silent understanding. "I get that. Friends are typically a privilege for the fortunate."

Harlow nodded. "Eventually I fell in with the wrong crowd. I started doing illegal things, drugs, killing, the like. Apparently I was pretty good at what I did, because one man came up to me and asked me to let him train me to become an assassin. The way he put it, it sounded like a good thing. Being paid to seek revenge for someone, something like that, I don't remember."

"Revenge is self-destructive," Coraline said in an almost robotic voice, as if quoting someone else. "So people hire others to keep the stain off of their own hands. So you agreed?"

Harlow nodded. "It didn't take long for me to realize that it was the wrong thing to do," he said. "But I had no way out."
