"Then people would see you for who you really are," Coraline said. "Not what you are. Who you are. The problem is, I haven't figured you out yet."

"And what if who I really am is what I am," Harlow said.

"Then you're just going to have to figure out if you're what you were back then," Coraline said simply, urging Gypsy into a slightly faster trot as they approached wooded terrain.

"And I suppose that would also be true for every wrongdoer out there," Harlow said. He didn't want her to be biased to him just because she knew him a little.

"Exactly," Coraline said. "No one's perfect. So why pretend to be something you're not? People who stay in darkness do so because they have something to hide. I'd rather walk in the light."

"And I might prefer to stay in the darkness," Harlow said. "I haven't decided yet."

Coraline made a small hum of acknowledgement as the woods closed in around them. Gypsy tossed her head nervously whereas Heracles plodded merrily on.

"We're going to a lake house that Crypta mentioned, unless you have a better idea," Harper said.

Harlow was silent for awhile before asking, "Did you and your mom have a good relationship?"

Coraline fiddled with a loose string on her sleeve, avoiding eye contact. "Yeah, I think so. We were pretty close."

For some reason he liked listening about Coraline's family. He wondered what his parents had been like.
"What happened to your dad?" -
"As I said earlier, my brother died when I was twelve. He fell into depression, started drinking, gambling, and the like. He started to take his anger out on me and my mom. He wasn't my father anymore at that point," Coraline said stiffly, tying her wavy brown hair into a bun.
