Reyna gave her a friendly nod—friendly, but not too friendly and a wave goodbye. "Farewell. Until we meet again, Mabel."
-
"Addio, Padrona," Mabel said. "I will come with your clothing later in the day." And with that she was gone.
-
A sense of foreboding came to Reyna. "Adios," she said, but the door was already shut.
-
*addio
-
Nickola came in a bit later. "Come, mio cara, the table is set."
-
Reyna followed him unquestioningly at first, but then broke free and tried to run.
-
Nickola soon caught her. He had always been fast, and he knew he was stronger than her. "Naughty, naughty,
la mia piccola cerva. Perhaps I should cut off your feet? That way you will not be able to run from me." -
"I'm not your slave, Candrevo. You can’t just adopt a wife," Reyna said with a fierce gleam in her eyes. "That's not how it works."
-
"Mio schiavo, no!" Nickola said. "You misunderstand me, my dear."
-
"And you misunderstand me. I don’t want anything to do with you, Nickola. Please, I beg of you to respect my wishes." Reyna was already annoyed that he had hired maids when he could sweep the floors himself. Life was about work, not making others do your work for you.
-
"Mio amore," Nickola said. There was danger in his voice. "I vowed that you would be mine. You will be mine."
-
"I'm not yours, and I never will be. You don’t own me, Candrevo," Reyna shouted. "I'm not an object that you can just buy."
-
"We will go down to breakfast," Nickola said, his voice carrying a thousand threats, digging his nails into her skin. Then quieter, he said, "I don't want to have to hurt you again."
-
Stubbornly, Reyna crossed her arms and refused.
-
Nickola moved his nails down, breaking her skin underneath their sharpness. Blood seeped out of the open wound.
