Sophia nodded. "I've never celebrated anything," she said.
-
"Not even birthdays?" Christmas said, looking sad. "Do you even know when your birthday is?"
-
Sophia nodded and rolled up her sleeve. "Five three," she said, pointing to the last two numbers of her code. "May third."
-
Christmas made a mental note to remember that. "Do your other code numbers have meaning like that?"
-
"I'm the six hundred eighty-first prisonborn that's been in my age group," Sophia said.
-
"Six hundred and eighty first?" Christmas said, shocked. "There are that many of you?"
-
"That's been in my age group ever," Sophia specified. "Once we're eighteen we're no longer considered prisonborn and are transferred to a different prison where the real criminals are kept."
-
"That's awful," Christmas said earnestly. "Why do they keep Prisonborn inside forever?"
-
"Once deemed a criminal, you are always a criminal," Sophia said.
-
"But that isn't fair," Christmas said as Pat trotted down the stairs.
-
"It's never been," Sophie said. "Tell me, before you met me, did you think all of us were rotten criminals?"
-
"Well, no," Christmas said. "Not all of you. My sister's Prisonborn. I've never met her, but I know my mother would have raised her right."
-
"We're not raised by our parents," Sophia said. "We're put in a nursery, and as soon as we're five years old we're put in a cell."
She suddenly remembered the worst question she had ever asked. She had been three or four. 'Where am I? Why are we here?'
They hadn't sugarcoated the truth in any way. She had gone to bed in tears that night. -
Christmas winced. "Why would anyone do that?"
-
"Something about how they don't want parents teaching their kids dirty tricks," Sophia said.
She sighed and vented. "And now I'm part of a test to see if prisonborns can actually live outside of the prison without getting into any trouble. We're too scared to get into trouble at the prison. I was scared you were going to be like the guards when you saw the dog on top of me. I have so much I have to prove, but I don't know how I can' They've thrown me into a completely different world with little to no knowledge about it. I don't even know what we're walking on or what those big metal things that speed pass us are, or anything like that! I no idea how I'm supposed to act so that I don't get thrown back into jail and condemn every other prisonborn to a life of confinement!"
