"What's a bird?"
-
Christmas's brain was getting very close to exploding. "Well, it's something like a pigeon. It has wings and a beak, and it can usually fly."
-
"What're wings and a beak? Usually? In books it sounds like flying is traveling through the air, is that what it is?"
-
"Sort of," Christmas said. "They flap their wings and it keeps them up. A beak is that mouth thing the pigeon had."
-
"Oh," Sophia said. "Why do they have pointy mouths?"
-
"Probably because they need to break things open and fight," Christmas said with a shrug. "I'm not completely sure."
-
"They fight?!" Sophia said. "But they're so small!"
-
"Most things will fight when threatened," Christmas said. "And a pigeon is no exception."
-
Sophia stood up and started walking again. "Hardly anyone tried fighting the guards," she said.
-
"That's because you would probably get punished," Christmas said. "If you punished an animal, it would still fight at first, but eventually it would submit."
-
"At the prison if you didn't submit right away they beat you until you did" Sophie said.
(Poor girl was in an abusive situation with these guards) -
Oof ))
"They beat you?" Christmas said, concern edging his voice as he stopped walking and turned to look at her. "Are you hurt?" -
"I still have a big bruise from last time," Sophia said. She felt her back where the tender skin was. "It wasn't even my fault what I did it was one of the guards."
-
Christmas made a twitching motion as if he wanted to hug her, but couldn't decide whether to do it or not. He hugged her anyway. "I'm so sorry," he said in a soft whisper.
-
Sophie was surprised when he wrapped his arms around her. She didn't know what it was, but it felt nice and comforting. "It's not your fault," she said.
