"Still," Christmas said, letting go after a moment or two. "I was so judgmental when I first met you. I didn't know what to think. Now I know."
-
"I was expecting worse than you," Sophia said honestly. She looked around. "Which building are we supposed to go into?"
-
"To go home?" Christmas said. "It's that tall one back there."
-
"I am getting tired," Sophia admitted. "All this exploring the world stuff."
-
"Well, there's always tomorrow," Christmas said with a smile. "Come on, let's go."
He dragged Pat along, who was protesting and straining at his leash. -
Sophia followed him back to the house. She wondered where she would be sleeping. Did they have cells here too or something different?
-
"There's a bed in there," Christmas said, pointing towards his bedroom and unhooking Pat's leash. "I'll be camping on the couch with Pat tonight."
-
"What's camping?" Sophia asked. "Nevermind, you're probably tired of my questions." She walked where Christmas directed and peeked inside the room. This was so much different than the cells she was used to. The cells were seven by six feet, big enough for a cot, an extra set of clothing, and her.
-
Christmas got out a blanket and threw it over himself. Pat jumped onto Christmas's chest and stood there for about 10 seconds before deciding to sleep at his feet.
-
Sophia sat on the squishy cot. So this was a bed? She looked around. Why was there a large box with a bunch of handles all over the front? And there was cloth over some rectangles of glass. She decided to not think about it. She got under the covers and soon fell asleep.
-
A feeble winter sun cast its pale rays into the household, its light fingertips gently caressing the furniture with warmth and glow. Pat whined in protest when Christmas sat up, blinking away his exhaustion.
-
Sophia got up when her body naturally told her to. The exact time she had woken up every day of her life. She got up and stepped the unnatural length of the bedroom. It didn't feel normal, walking much more than 2-3 feet to get to the door. She held out her arm to be scanned, but when her hand brushed the door, she realized that she didn't need to be scanned. Not anymore.
But how did she open the door? -
Christmas straightened out his wrinkled shirt, which was for business. He let out an exhausted sigh, realizing that he'd have to straighten it. He threw the blanket off of his legs and began to wonder why he was sleeping on the couch when he saw his bedroom door and it clicked.
Ah yes. He was hosting Sophia. That was why. -
Sophia tried pushing, but it didn't work. She saw the handle and tried pulling it, but it also didn't work. "Christmas?" she called. "I don't know how to open the door."
-
Christmas walked over and opened the door, pushing the handle down and freeing Sophia from the room. "Here, you push it down like this," he said, repeating the motion. Pat darted over to the two, his tail wagging.
