"Yep, cakes in pans. Go ahead, try it," Christmas said. Pat was ready to devour the pancake whole but to his disappointment, Christmas picked him up.
-
Sophia cut off a piece and ate it. Her eyes widened. There was actual flavor. If pancakes tasted like this, what did other things taste like? "I've missed out on so much," she whispered to herself.
-
Christmas smiled. "I take it that you like it?"
-
Sophia nodded with a smile and are the rest of the food on her plate. "Why is your name Christmas?" she inquired.
-
Christmas smile faded for a split second, then went back to normal. "Oh, my mom was always into really unique names," he said, setting Pat down and letting him run around.
-
"But I thought it was a...oh what's it called I forgot...holiday. I thought Christmas was a holiday," she said. Sometimes she'd overhear the guards talking to each other and she always did her best to remember what they said. And one of those things they had talked about was Christmas.
-
"It is a holiday," Christmas said. "But it's also my name. Did you ever know anyone with an odd name like that?"
-
"Names are for freeborn," she said, looking down a bit. She showed him her arm. "We're called by our code all our lives. I was given my name right before I left so that I would fit in better."
-
"Well, that's disappointing," Christmas said with a sigh. "I'm looking for a Prisonborn. Her name would probably be Valentine if she had been born free."
His mood seemed to be dampened for a moment but then he focused on Sophia, pushing away any negative thoughts. "But anyway, how do you like the world?" -
"It's...overwhelming," Sophia said. She then went into more detail. "My whole life the only color I've ever seen is gray. Then suddenly I'm in a world full of color. My eyes don't know how to take it all in. And I don't even know what half the things here are." She picked up a black roundish box covered in buttons. "Like what's this thing?" she asked.
The little box slipped out of her hands, and in the process of catching it. Sophia hit the button at the top. Suddenly another box with glass on the front erupted with color and sound. SHe jumped in surprise.
There were three people behind the glass sitting at an oddly shaped table. And they were talking about her.
"What do you think of this," one of them said. "The government has let a prisonborn into society."
A picture of Sophia's face popped up on the screen. It had been taken at the prison when she had been getting scanned. When it had been taken, she wasn't sure.
"What on earth are they thinking?" another one said.
Sophia stared in horror. Then she grabbed the little box and started fumbling with the buttons trying to find the one that would make the large box stop.
"She's a criminal. She'll probably murder someone in the streets or steal something from the stores."
No that button made it louder she didn't want it louder.
"I won't let my children near her as long as she's around."
That button made the sound go off, but they were still talking about her, she knew they were.
That button didn't seem to do anything
Finally she pressed the button she had pressed the first time to turn it on. Once the glass went black the little buttoned box flew out of her hand like a hot potato. -
"Sophia, are you okay?" Christmas said. "They're just reporters. They just say overdramatic things for attention. What they said isn't true."
-
Sophia was taking deep breaths to calm herself. "They don't know what it's like," she said quietly. "They don't know what we go through."
-
"Of course they don't," Christmas said, sitting next to her. "Don't pay any attention to them."
-
Sophia calmed down. She looked up at Christmas. "You're not like the guards," she thought aloud.
-
"Why would I be?" Christmas said, concern written on his face. Pat jumped onto the couch and whined, flopping around on his lap.
