The forecast hadn't called for any traces of rain that day, and only for a slight breeze. Evelyn looked down at the droplets that fell onto her hands. She stared at the crimson liquid wide-eyed. The first thought that came to her mind was blood, but that couldn't be.
Then there was a gaping black hole in the middle of the stage that was growing. There was no trap door that could do that, Evelyn knew. She had no idea how any of this was possible, whether is was trickery or real. -
Asmodai grinned wildly, as the rain continued to pick up and the hole in the stage widened. "When I had heard the tales of these fisherman, I myself could not believe the tales they were telling. I had to go see for myself." He started to cackle as the wind and rain suddenly stopped. The hole in the stage had stopped widening. "And when I did, what I saw made my heart stop, but alas! If I had stayed still, I would have been killed by this ruthless beast!" As soon as Asmodai had shouted the word beast, the creature rose up from the depths of the hole.
It looked as if it was a distant cousin to a dragon. It had three heads, each on of them intently entranced at someone in the audience. The middle ones mouth wide open, revealing its sharp teeth and long tongue.
Asmodai smiled as he lowered himself onto the middle hydra's head. "Scared yet?" he chuckled. Some people in the audience nodded their head, while others stood in shock. His attention though, was drawn to a set of girls who looks absolutely terrified. He snapped his fingers and everything returned back to normal on stage. "I promise, it's just a bit of illusionary magic. Nothing more nothing less." He chuckled.
"Now, this is the time for an intermission! If you need anything, go get it and come back to enjoy the rest of the show!" He chuckled, stepping backstage. He had to make this fast. With a snap of his fingers his whole body composition changed. It was painful to say the least, but it had to do. He made his way toward the audience. He had to find those girls, and ask them some questions. They had peaked his curiosity. He felt that them, of all places is where the energy was coming from. He just couldn't distinguish who it was. -
Evelyn stared in awe and horror at the monster that had risen out of the hole. Then it was intermission. She stood up a little shakily out of her seat. She was thirsty. They had grabbed snacks, but not drinks.
"I'm going to get us something to drink," Evelyn told Madison. "What do you want?"
Madison shrugged. "Pop. I don't care which kind."
Evelyn nodded and went searching for the stand she could get the drinks at while Madison stayed in her seat. Evelyn found it and started deciding what she should get for the two of them. -
As he made his way through the crowd, the energy grew stronger. It was like a subtle force, pusing him away, yet pulling him closer. Maybe it had something to do with the body he possesed, and the soul within. There was only one true way to get to the bottom of this, and it was to find her, whomever she was. Asmodai paused for a second, and made it look as if he was looking for a friend. He noticed the girls friend, but didn't see the one he was looking for. He internally sighed, and trekked onward. His muscles were starting to tire from transforming into this form.
He pushed through the crowd, and followed the energy pulse into the lobby. The room itself was almost empty, which was good. It meant he could transform back into his "Masked Devil" form seamlessly. As he walked, his form began to flicker, and shape back into his red suit and show clothes. He could see the girl he was looking for, getting a refreshment and smiled. The mask was slightly obscuring his vision, so he fixed it before he moved on. As he stood there, he could feel everyone in the room, staring and gawking at him. He shook it off, and tapped the girl on the shoulder.
This was the moment he had been waiting for. -
"Oh!" Evelyn said jumping a bit, startled. She turned her head only to see The Masked Devil himself! Why had he tapped her shoulder? He obviously wanted to talk to her, but why? She had absolutely no idea how to react.
"Oh - I ... uhh ... What is it?" Evelyn managed to say. -
"Hello!" He stated, as happy and as joyful as he could muster. "I would like to read your fortune after the show, if you're okay with that." A smirk flashed across his face as he looked her in the eyes. Normally, he could look at anyone amd read them like a book, but her. She was different, and he wanted to know why. He also wanted to know why Adrian felt such a pull to her as well. After all, magic was the point of him being here. Why not use it for some personal gain as well? He would still get Adrians soul, and all would be well.
Hell, he might even come out with another if he played his cards right. He extended his hand. "It's nice to meet you, Evelyn." He whispered her name as they shook hands, and grinned. Tonight, Asmodai would make sure Adrian never saw the glimpse of redemption. Even if it meant risking it all. -
Evelyn stared at him wide-eyed. "How...?" then she shook her head. He had probably looked at a signup sheet, or something, if there was one. But either way, he was half creeping her out. "Um...Sure," she said, trying her best to seem unfazed.
-
The grin that sketched across Asmodai's face couldn't conceal his happiness. "Meet me back-stage after the show." He turned and walked away, people starting at him made his way back into the inside of the venue. Although Asmodai knew this was necessary, he could feel Adrian trying to take the spot light. He felt the inside of his body rumble, and it felt...painful. Nothing like this has ever happened before.
Adrian looked outside from within and screamed. He needed to find a way to get out, or dispell this demon from his body. He looked around, but had no luck. He was just floating in the endless abyss of his mind. If he wanted to save this girl before it was to late, he was going to have to formulate a plan. And fast.
Just as soon as the pain came, it went. Asmodai straighted his walk, and marched his way through the crowd. Every person he passed, just stared at him. "Ladies and gentlemen! Are you ready for more?" He looked at the audience and smiled at their reactions. It was a chorus of whistles, and "Yeah's!". He nodded as he walked back up onto the stage, and sat down cross-legged. He could feel the droplets of rain from his previous "trick", and it made him anticipate this act even more. -
Evelyn hurried back to her seat. She handed Madison her cup of pepsi and she sat down sipping her own water.
"What took so long?" Madison asked, having a good perception of time.
"Nothing," Evelyn lied. "I accidentally spilled the drinks." She hated lying, especially to her. "Can we stay a bit after the show?" she asked.
"Sure," Madison said, looking at her, wondering what they'd need to stay after for, but Evelyn didn't reveal what for. They both turned to watch the rest of the show. -
As Asmodai scanned the crowd, the lights on the stage dimmed. "This next tale will not be for the faint of heart." His voice cracked slightly, as he scanned the crowd. He raised his arms, and started to levitate again. His suit changed into a royal purple color. "After the hydra had been tamed, and sent on its way, all was well for a little while. Then, the king threw a royal ball to celebrate what had been done." As Asmodai said this, the sound of an orchestra playing could be heard behind the audience. On stage there were various couples dancing. The ladies in eloquent silk ball gowns and the gentleman in fetching silk suits.
A stunning woman in a royal purple gown that was adorned in purple gems of every shade, stood next to Asmodai and asked him for a dance. He accepted her offer and they could be seen levitating, and dancing for several minutes. It was as if the demon himself was in a trance. Soon, he snapped out of it though. "As soon as this dance was over, the king stood up and made a speech, thanking everyone who came and asking to see the person who had tamed the hydra." He said this part, as if he had some regrets, but we walked up the misty, mirage of a staircase. He stood next to a man that was squat of nature, and dressed in white and gold clothes. The king turned to looked at him. His eyes glistened as if he was hiding something more sinister beneath them. "Would you like to take my daughter's hand in marriage?"
"But, I had no idea who his daughter was." He said out into the audience, he grinned slightly. "So I asked! It was the young woman who was in the eloquent royal purple ball gown. When I saw her, my jaw dropped. I felt foolish if I didn't take the oppurtunity to take her hand in marriage." Asmodai walked down the stairs, and they disappeared as soon as be place his foot off stage. -
Evelyn tried to pay attention to the show but she was distracted by the thoughts in her head, still unsettled by what had just happened. Why did he want to tell her fortune? Why her and not her friend who was sitting right next to her? What was so special about her?
She put her thoughts aside and watched the entrancing story. -
As Asmodai walked to the front of the stage, the woman from before materialized behind him. "As time grew on, after we had married...I truly realized who was the pawn." As he spoke, bruises started to blossom along the woman's arm and face. Asmodai seemed to flinch for a moment, before returning to his theatrical persona. "She was the pawn, and I was there to try to be her knight in shining armor." He walked beside the apparition of the woman, and touched the side of her face. All of the bruises disappeared from her face, and she smiled again.
"Night after night, we would come up with plans. Most had failed, and resulted in harsh beatings for both of us. But, one night we thought we did it." The scene of a room materialized behind Asmodai. It was made of stone, but you could tell it belonged to someone of high power. There were peasants clothes on the bed, and Asmodai snapped his fingers and the outfits were on him, and the woman in no time. "We thought we could dress as commoners and flee the castle." A shadowy version of Asmodai ran down the hall, carrying her in tow. But as soon as they caught a glimpse of freedom...the guards and the king made themselves known and blocked the path. "That night, I fought for her tooth and nail, but we both ended being dragged back to the castle. On stage the guards can be seen dragging two figures across the floor, small bloodstains trailing behind them.
"Then, fate changed." Asmodai cackled as his eyes turned into a fiery red. "I was summoned to the castle, by the king." A tattered version of Asmodai kneeled down in the throne-room. The king approached him, and motioned two guards to stand by Asmodai's sides and hold his arms.
The audience could see flashes of Asmodai getting stabbed, then resurrected by the king. They could see a contract behind thrown into flames. Asmodai was sure this was going to leave them confused. But there always had to be another show, at another time. Before he left the audience though, he grinned, and waved one hand in the air. This caused any debris that was on the ground to disappear. "Come see me at my next show! I'll see you there!" His eyes flashed red behind his mask, as the curtains fell to leave the audience with a sense of awe.
Asmodai was more concerned about the fortune he was reading tonight though. He walked back to the room he had specifically rented out for this purpose and sat down in a chair, closest to the wall. Now, all he had to do was wait. -
The show was over. "Wait for me in the car," she told Madison. She nodded and headed out of the room. Evelyn walked over to the backstage, wondering if she would even be allowed back there. Surprisingly she had no trouble at all, save for the uncertain knot in her stomach.
Evelyn knocked on a door, hoping it was the right door, and not someone else's. -
Asmodai sat in his chair, and listened as Evelyn knocked on the door. He leaned forward so his face could be seen as he lit a candle, and placed it in the center of the table. "Come in." he chuckled slightly. "Don't be shy." He leaned forward amd looked at her as she stepped into the room. The energy around her seemed to vibrate, and then still. Interesting, very interesting. But why now? So many thoughts rushed through his mind. He took a deep breath and motioned to the chair across from him.
"You can sit down. I promise I don't bite." His voice was tense, but it was definitely different than his voice on stage. Asmodai looked at his watch, and gritted his teeth together. Time was running short, so he had to hurry; but first he had to make the girl trust him. He pulled a deck of black cards out of his breast pocket, and placed them on the table. "Shuffle the deck. Ask it a question, then hand the deck to me." He gave her what seemed like a genuine smile, and pushed the deck toward her. "Whatever card I pull, will show your future." He leaned back and watched as she shuffled the cards. -
Evelyn was admittedly nervous as she sat down. Ask a question? Knowing her the first question that would come to mind would be something like, Which flavor of ice cream will I be getting next, or something not serious at all like that. She didn't know if she had to say the question out loud or not, she had no idea how this works.
What if she didn't ask a question? she wondered. She decided to do that as she finished attempting to shuffle (she's never been good at shuffling) and handed the cards to him.
