"Agreed," Kenna said. "But I doubt we could."

"Who says we can't?" Ander said, looking at Kenna with an unfaltering gaze. "If Crypta can hide for this long, maybe we could too."

"Or just long enough so that they forget about us," Kenna said, glancing at him.

"Maybe," Ander said. Deep down, he realized that they would always be after him, even if they forgot about her. He knew too much. "You might make it."

Kenna looked at him. "You would too," she said, almost like a child having full faith in the best. She couldn't imagine not having Ander by her side.

Ander's eyes were almost mournful. "No, I wouldn't. You know it and I know it."

"But...there has to be a way," Kenna said.

"I am NOT going to put you in any more danger," Ander said. "Crypta can help you. She'll know what to do."

"Ander..." Kenna said quietly. Her heart was hurting.
"What're you going to do?" -
"Whatever I have to do to keep you safe," Ander said softly. "I made a promise, remember?"

"You saved my life it's not fair that you should die for me," Kenna said, trying to make him reconsider, but knew it would be to no avail.

"Life isn't fair, Kenna," Ander said. "If it was, you wouldn't have been in this situation in the first place."

Kenna didn't know what to say to that. "I need to clear my head," she said, getting up and walking outside. She sat on the front steps and put her head in her hands. She didn't know what to do.

Crypta set a blueberry pie on the table with a bright and happy expression on her face, which quickly faded away when she saw Ander. "What's wrong?" she said. "Where's Kenna?"
