Dorvakin said "That sounds fine for me. When will he leave?"
-
Mavrog flicked his tongue through the gap of his teeth. "As soon as you get on." He turned to Tjruna. "Asks a lot of questions, this one. Do I ever get to know why you've changed your policy to work with him?" She pushed past him and got onto the cart. "Maybe someday, but not today."
-
Dorvakin followed Tjruna, slightly annoyed at the "asks a lot of questions" remark. He got onto the cart with her and waited.
-
Almost immediately after they'd both boarded, the cart took off at an unusually fast pace. Tjruna turned back and watched Mavrog wave at them until he was nothing but a speck in the distance, then she took out the map and tried to read it in the poor light of the swinging lantern on the cart. "It's no wonder the king needed help from people so far away from the capitol. The trip that took the heir weeks should only take us a few hours at the pace." She settled down between the barrels and examined her partner. "You're not like the other guild members. You're quiet, analytical. What's your story?"
-
Dorvakin closed his eyes and sighed. He answered "I'm afraid for the time being, my origin will be a secrets. All I can tell you is I've never known who my real parents are, or why they gave me up."
-
Tjruna nodded. "I get it. The past can be...." She sighed. "Hard to talk about. That's why I do what I do. Quick, easy jobs where I can be on and out without creating a history or leaving anyone behind." She looked off into the night, her thoughts preoccupied.
-
Dorvakin nodded and said "A wise policy to adopt. I just hope the money from this job can help me finally get out of the guild."
-
"That's the issue with guilds. Well, one of the issues, at least." She flashed him a grin. "I like you. You've got a good head and you can handle yourself in a negotiation. You'll make it well on your own."
-
Dorvakin said "And you have a good way of getting information. I can see why you travel alone."
-
"It's easier. Quicker." She put the map and away and leaned closer to Dorvakin. "Have you ever had to kill someone, just to make the job a little easier? I'd be surprised, guilds are usually more uptight about that sort of thing, but... No loose ends makes the job much cleaner."
-
Dorvakin said "I have come close but I haven't done it myself. The guy was very annoying and kept blaming me for things he did. Never listened to any of my plans and just rushed in."
-
Tjruna raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Are you saying you almost killed another guild member?"
-
Dorvakin said "Yes. But trust me, if you had known him, you'd understand the justifiability. Jokes on him though. He got fired a short time later. And by fired I mean, went on a solo assignment and died."
-
Tjruna laughed. "Serves him right." Aside from the small lantern lighting the cart, everything surrounding them was pitch black darkness, although occasionally the light of the lantern caught the eyes of mysterious creatures before they were left in the wake of the speeding cart. However, animals were not the only eyes on the cart.
-
Dorvakin looked out into the darkness. He had hoped no animal would come out of it and attack. He wasn't prepared for that.
