made a pony

The kitchen looked like it should be in a cottage, rather than a home like this. The floors were wooden, the walls were creme and decorated with flowers.
“ oh that’s just so my security system know you’re an ally.” Smokey-Heart says absentmindedly. “ It means if you were to come in here without me knowing, my security system won’t attack you,” she explains. -
"Well now, don't I feel special." Sekhmet murmured, turning around and trying to gaze around the corner of the doorway without leaving the kitchen. This place was so cool! And to think it was all put together by only one pony. That made it all the more impressive.
She couldn't see much, so for now, she turned her attention back to her partner.
"So we're supposed to get to know each other." She paused, frowning at the snacks she seemed to be getting together. "What are you doing?" -
“ oh, I’m just making some snacks, I always find everything is better with a full stomach.” She nodded as she levitated everything to the living room.
The living room was carpeted , and in warm colours. A faux fire place at the centre, along with odd boxes of black.
“ I call it a TeaVee.” Smokey said matter of factly
As she sat down,
“ what do you do for fun?” -
Sekhmet followed like a lost puppy, wishing more than anything she could just explore the house on her own. She could do without the tedious small talk.
"TeaVee?"
She looked around the room again, painting herself a mental map of the place as each room was revealed to her. The question posed by the unicorn brought her attention back around, but reluctantly. Yes, they were supposed to be getting to know each other, but why did it have to feel like pulling teeth? Creeping Cloud had said a code word or a secret handshake could be learned by the enemy, but surely there had to be a way around that.
She sat down close to the faux fireplace, trying to maintain some kind of eye contact with Smokey and appear interested in anything but the house itself.
"I like to swim, and read." she stated, feeling like a foal introducing herself to her class. "What about you?" -
“ I like to work on the house, this kind of beauty isn’t built over night.” Smokey said cheerfully. “ but I like to do other projects as well, such as the TeaVee or my...well I’m working on building a device to let unicorns and earthponies fly and live among the Pegasi if they so wished.” She says nervously,
Everyone one else she has told had been critical of her plan to disrupt the natural flow, but Sekhmet was an Alicorn, surely she’d understand? -
Sekhmet had been prepared for the first part of Smokey's answer. The unicorn seemed like the type that needed an ongoing project, and what could be a better outlet than perpetual home improvement? That last bit, however..
"Let unicorns and earthponies... fly? Like.. like a jetpack? Hover board? Prosthetic wings?"
There were so many possibilities. She hadn't even considered something like that before. Given just the idea of allowing everypony to fly immediately made Sekhmet think of her mother. An earthbound vagabond. She was sure she would be ecstatic at the idea of being allowed to explore the skies.
"That sounds really cool. How far along are you with that?" -
Smokey-heart frowned for the first time since they had been partnered up. “ unfortunately so far my research has hit a dead end, my prototypes just haven’t worked out. At first I thought maybe I should build non-pegasi wings, but they were just too heavy for a pony to wear.” She explains.
“ then, they were just not strong enough to support a ponies weight. The boots are also impossible to test because I have no safe way to get up to clouds dale. Everypony I’ve questioned has mocked the idea.”
“ there’s magic for that smokeyheart.” The mechanic said in a terrible impression of princess twilight.
“ if you were meant to fly, you would have been born a pegasi.” She said.
“ but that’s not fair. That isn’t how it works, and I’m going to figure out how to fly!” She said her voice full of emotion.
“..I’m sorry, that was...I’m just very passionate about this subject, it will need to go on a back burner while I develop anti-changeling technology.” She sighed, -
Sekhmet listened intently as the unicorn ranted. She was surprised to find that for the first time that day, she was genuinely interested in what she had to say. She ignored the comment tacked on at the end. If Smokey really wanted to stop talking about it, she'd insist on changing the topic. Until then..
"What if someone with wings were to test them? That way, if they failed, that pony could just fly themselves to safety." -
“ ...actually that makes sense...pegasi don’t wear shoes because it interferes with their natural ability to walk on clouds...and so it would be as if you were a unicorn or an earth pony! Sekhmet you’re a genius!” Smokey said as she disappeared briefly and came back with her files.
“ this is all my research, and test blueprints.” She explains as she briefly flicks through some failed wing designs.
“ these are the boots. They need to have a built in failsafe...just in case.” -
Receiving a compliment like that from such a talented pony turned out to mean a lot more to Sekhmet than she cared to admit. She'd never become so invested in anyone quite this quickly. It hardly seemed fair. Still, she eagerly looked over the pages Smokey had produced. Naturally, she didn't understand most of what she read, but the pictures and diagrams were simple enough.
"What do you mean, failsafe? Like an airbag? But for boots?" -
“ pretty much, in your case, if the boots don’t take, or they fail, you have your wings, and I’ll be ready to assist with magic in anyway I can.” She confirms.
“ There was an attempt at this by a mare a few years back, she was a unicorn, it...didn’t turn out well for her.” Smokey says.
Glancing at the picture on her mantle.
She shake so her head,
“ anyway, I could probably have a prototype built for Thursday..if we have time, and you want to continue testing it..that is.” She suggests bashfully. -
Sekhmet followed her eyes to the photo. The tone of her voice told a story the alicorn was sure she didn't want to hear. She decided not to push for details. Not now, anyway.
"Thursday... alright, sure. I'd love to help test these." -
“ that’s great! I’ll buy food, so don’t worry about that. Okay now regarding a secret passcode, I suggest we create exactly fourteen. Two for each day of the week. This way if either of us get compromised, there is the extra defense. We would do one of two actions depending on the day, that way if we were being watched, it would likely confuse the changeling, if not actually deceive them.”
-
Sekhmet was startled by the sudden change in subject. It was nice to hear that she wasn't the only one skeptical of Creeping Cloud's advice, though. And that did seem like a pretty thorough strategy.
"That sounds fine." she agreed, but couldn't help but feel a little disappointed that Smokey did want to bypass the project of getting to know each other. She might have made an interesting friend..
Sekhmet shook her head, stamping a hoof violently on the floor before she could stop herself. She could play that off if need be. More importantly, she needed to avoid sentimental thoughts like that. -
“ Passcodes are dumb.” She decided. “ it will be obvious, we need to become familiar with each other so our supposed passcode appears to be a greeting between friends, but also so that it’s distinct. “ she huffs.
Smokey heart tensed up as her computer made an announcement
“ Misty heart species: Pegasus, designation 002”
“...she shouldn’t be here.” Smokey muttered as she ran off.
