It took a only a couple of minutes for Isaac's anxiety to turn into frustration, particularly with himself. He tried to steady his shaky breaths but found himself failing miserably. It was such a struggle to be so worried about his surroundings at all times. What was stopping him from recovering? Why couldn't he handle walking around in a f---ing grocery store? Why was the incident having such an awful effect on him? Would he ever get better? All of the questions swarmed inside of his head like angry africanized bees would buzz about a nest. His stomach felt like it was doing somersaults. Kneeling down in front of the toilet, his nervousness (and breakfast) came pouring out of him in piles of vomit. After heaving fow a few moments, he sat with his back against the stall and his knees pulled tightly to his chest.
-
Caroline, with her back against the door, decided it was in Isaac’s best interest for her to join him. Retching wasn’t usually a good sign that someone was safe.
She swung open the door, and knocked a knuckle against the only closed stall. “Isaac? Are you alright in there?” She asked, leaning against the door to see what she could hear. She did know one thing - it smelled vile. -
(So I hecked up, Isaac boi is 21 not 22. That whole ordeal happened on his 21st birthday and it's only been a few months so that makes sense)
Isaac reached a hand up to flush the toilet, but the sound of Caroline's voice caught him by surprise. He looked at the door to the stall, catching a glimpse of her shoes to confirm that it was her. The young man stood, finally flushing his vomit down in swirls of fresh water. He opened the door to the stall, peering wearily at Caroline.
Sorry, he signed. I don't want to go back out there. I don't know why I'm such a worried mess all the time. Of course, he knew why, but admitting that he still wasn't over the ordeal was too embarassing. It'd been at least three months since it happened and he saw no reason for his brain to be so out of sorts. -
Caroline opened her mouth to talk, closed it, and then patted his shoulder awkwardly. “It’s... alright. I’ll check out and we can go home - I’ll get the rest of the groceries tonight.” She said, trying to be gentle. Trying to help him was like walking across eggshells. You couldn’t go to fast, couldn’t tread to heavily. And that was difficult for her. She could analyze emotions all she wanted, but figuring them out was tricky business.
-
Isaac stared at her for a couple of seconds before he weakly nodded. He brushed past her in order to reach the sinks. He washed his hands, drying them on his pants afterwards. From there, he exited the bathroom, holding the door open for Caroline. Once they were back into the hustling, bustling environment of the grocery store, he placed his hand on the cart so that he would stay close at all times.
His stomach had calmed considerably after vomiting, so Isaac assumed that he would be alright until they got home. All he wanted to do was eat, cuddle Penelope, and sleep. He waited for Caroline to situate herself before beginning the trek to the check-out. -
i like how Caroline barges into the mens restroom and Isaac says nothing about it lmao))
Caroline tried to order all of the notes in her mind, and decided to wait until they arrived home to do that. She tried to make the check-out as painless as possible, so she went to self checkout. This had been quite the interesting day. She hardly believed she'd be doing this for weeks, maybe months. At least it would make for a swell research paper. -
(he just finished throwing up his insides he probably wouldnt have cared if a raccoon came out of the toilet)
Isaac helped bag the items once they arrived at self-checkout. He was grateful of the fact that Caroline had been so understanding. Any more of the busy atmosphere and he most likely would have had a total meltdown. He took about half of the bags when they were done, walking briskly toward the exit. As he stepped outside into the refreshing air, he finally felt like he could catch his breath. Once he had Caroline stood waiting at the bus stop, he signed, Sorry again. -
Good point good point poor boi))
“There’s nothing to be sorry for. I pushed you too far. I’ll be more careful next time.” She said, watching for the bus to arrive. She just hoped he wasn’t too shaken from this. That would make her job harder. -
(baha :()
Isaac nodded gratefully, peering over to the road just as the bus arrived. He entered the bus once again, only paying his own bus fare as he recalled Caroline's reaction from before. He found empty seats near the front of the bus and shuffled in so that he could nab the window seat. He set the grocery bags by his feet and proceeded to rest his head against the window.
He hoped that Caroline didn't feel bad for taking him to the store. It wasn't her fault, after all, that he was so afraid. In his opinion, she was actually doing quite a good job. He probably wouldn't have gotten so far on his own. -
Caroline silently mounted the bus, paying for her fare and sitting next to Isaac. As soon as she was seated, she took out a pen and started scribbling madly in her notebook. She had gathered lots of information during this trip and it was critical to her that she wrote it all down. Who knew a simple grocery store trip would be such an interesting disaster? No wonder Isaac had hired her.
The bus ride was fairly smooth, and Caroline didn’t look up once as she wrote down sentance after sentance. -
the dentist just flossed my teeth so hard that you can see the gaps in my teeth))
When the bus grinded to a halt in front of the apartment building, Isaac politely waited for Caroline to stand before exiting. He trudged along the stone walkways until they arrived at his building. The young man made his way up the steps and unlocked the door to his apartment, setting the grocery bags down near the entrance to the kitchen. He left the door open to provide Caroline easy access.
Almost instinctively, Penelope padded into the main room, rubbing against Isaac's leg. He scooped her into his arms, kicked off his shoes, and sat plopped onto the couch. He covered himself with a grey fleece blanket that he'd strung along the back of the furniture, adjusting Penelope so that she nestled gently into the crevice between his neck and shoulder. She purred happily as he pet her. -
Oh geez))
Caroline walked briskly into the apartment, closing and locking the door behind her. Immediately she started putting away groceries, not asking Isaac for help because he probably needed time to collect himself.
She took out some of the veggies and began prepping them, washing and cutting them and putting them in snack bags and such. -
Isaac searched for the remote to the television, holding Penelope close like a father would a child. She, though unable to speak and understand human emotion on the same level as a human themself, was comforting on a therapeutic scale. Somehow, she knew just what to do in order to relax and calm her owner. It was a bond that Isaac held with very few individuals.
Isaac channel surfed for a short while, eventually deciding to stop on the Food Network. A popular television program and talk show by the name of 'The Kitchen' played on the screen. Geoffrey Zakarian, a highly skilled chef and a host of the program, stood at a counter chopping a variety of herbs. He explained that he was creating the 'best shrimp seasoning the Food Network had ever seen'.
Isaac shrunk into the couch, grasping Penelope tenderly as he continued to watch. As he did so, a short stream of tears found itself trickling along his cheeks. He clenched his jaw in annoyance with his emotions, trying to focus on the program. -
Caroline was glancing disapprovingly at this show when she noticed Isaac crying. Oh god. The one thing she’s terrible at.
“Um, why are you crying?” She asked, trying to get a good view of Isaac’s face to determine his emotions. “There is no need to cry. But uh, cry as much as you need?” She had trouble articulating what she had learned about helping people who were crying. -
Isaac nearly opened his mouth to speak but was thankfully careful enough to refrain. He peered out of the sliding glass door that led into the balcony, watching as the clouds began to cover the shining sun. He lazily signed, I'm allowed to cry. I'm upset and overwhelmed, you know. Normal human emotion. He gave a small squeeze to Penelope, trying to focus on the show as Zakarian dipped the shrimp into the seasoning. It was lookong quite delicious.
