Caroline looked at the plate silently for a moment. "...We'll go shopping tomorrow then. I'll plan a weekly schedule so you don't get behind on sustenance again." She said, pushing the plate back in his direction. She tucked away that little fact to write down before bed.
"Cats are interesting to listen to, especially while reading. Quite... pleasant?" She said, as if trying to find the right word. She also mentally wrote down that he had a missing tooth, as her medical research was incomplete. -
Isaac almost frowned when his new guest refused to accept his offer. At the same time, he could understand why she did not. Cheese and crackers wasn't really an ideal dinner, especially when Caroline most likely had to travel for some time. He tossed a couple of pieces of cheese into his mouth, chewing and swallowing them in a matter of a couple of seconds. The cat meowed in want, so Isaac gave her half a piece of cheese to calm her down. He placed her onto the floor, leaning against the counter with wondering eyes.
How did you get here? I feel I should warn you that I still haven't bought another car. I usually take the bus or train or walk to get where I need. He felt quite embarrassed that he was coming off as so needy. Ever since the accident, he'd felt as though he'd fallen back a couple of years. He wasn't himself and he couldn't do things like he normally would. He almost felt guilty. In the world, he knew there were people who had gone through much worse and had experienced things more cruel. -
“That’s fine. Having travelled all over the world for my job, I find it more conveint for me not to own a car or private transportation at all. I also usually ride by train or bus.” She said, nodding her head curtly as to approve of his lack of vehicle. Of course, she knew that he did not have one for an entirely different reason, but that didn’t stop her.
She paused for a moment, opening and closing her mouth ss if trying to say something but she couldn’t quite get her head around it. She gave up with a sigh and a quick shake of her head to clear her thoughts, as she resumed her previous position. -
b---- i just watched the best episode of black mirror omgfbgfbnqwALJNVRJKGF i recommend san junipero if you ever get into it)))
Isaac nodded in understand. He automatically felt better when she explained her typical means of transportation. He stared up at her for a moment, unsure what else there was to say. The 22 year-old stood straight, scratching the top of his head. It was a wonder how he'd gotten by for the last few months as he could barely keep a conversation going for more than a few minutes. He bit his bottom lip, shrugged, and signed, If it's cool with you, I've had a long day, so I'm gonna shower and probably head to bed. It's pretty late anyway, right? We can go to the market at about 9:30 tomorrow morning. That's when there's the least amount of people.
With that, he made his way down the hallway and into his bedroom, Penelope following suit. He closed his door and plopped onto his bed, the small cat jumping up to lay on her owner's chest. In a whisper, he spoke to the feline. "Well, that wasn't so bad, was it, P? She seems...nice, right?" He kissed her nose before jumping up and heading into the bathroom connected to his bedroom. Carefully, the raven-haired male turned on the water to his shower system. Once removing his clothing, he gingerly stepped in. -
Caroline quickly went down the hall to her own room, writing down the information she had learned. She didn’t plan on wasting any time so she went to the kitchen and started compiling a list of groceries she thought were necessary. He really did have almost no food in here, and as a chef herself(she didn’t trust forgein very much), it was not a pleasant sight.
I watch some Black Mirror! Haven’t watched a full ep in a while tho)) -
(ughhhhhnfnnweknj it's so good!!!)
Isaac's shower only lasted a few minutes. He was seriously exhausted, not to mention the fact that any last energy he had was sucked away by talking to Caroline. He lazily threw on some pajama pants and an old tee-shirt. He shuffled across his hardwood floors until he fell into the comfort of his bed. In a matter of minutes, he was asleep, snoring away in deep slumber. Penelope curled her body on top of Isaac's feet, dozing just as easily as her owner had. -
Hearing his snoring all the way from the kitchen, Caroline confirmed that he was safely asleep and retired to bed. Not, of course, before writing down that he snored. As if she wouldn’t be remembering that one all on her own.
TIMESKIP
Caroline was up bright and early, cooking breakfast with what meager pickings there were left in the frigde. At the very least, she could clean out the kitchen completely before they went to go by food for the next two weeks or so. -
He was walking down that bustling street, drunken idiots and party-goers surrounding him. The night was bright and lively, the stars and city lights illuminating the scene. The young man pushed the sleeves of his hoodie up to his elbows, laughing in intoxication. It was his 21st birthday, and his friends had treated him to a night of drinking and partying. It was all over, however, and it was time to get home. He clicked his car keys, noticing their lights blinking just a bit further down the road. As he approached the vehicle, he was knocked back by an unknown force. Within seconds, he was in an dirty alleyway surrounded by broken bottles, heroin needles, and street rats. All he could hear was a gruff voice demanding his wallet and car keys. "No." the young man said, "No!"
With a gasp, Isaac woke to the sound of his phone alarm blaring. His breathing was rushed and shallow and Penelope, sensing her owner's distress, sauntered into his lap. He pet her mindlessly, shaking away the anxiety and upset the dream had brought about. He stood from his place, recalling that he and Caroline would be heading out to the market. The first worry pertained to what exactly he should wear. The young man sifted through his drawers before deciding on a pair of black jeans, a red flannel, and black Vans. It was simple and wouldn't draw much attention.
He shuffled out of the bedroom, catching whiff of a scent wafting through his apartment. Peeking into the kitchen, he caught a glimpse of Caroline and waved. He made his way into the area, signing, Ah! Breakfast. I'm surprised you were able to find anything enough to make it. -
“Two eggs, a toaster strudel, ice cream, peanut butter.” She said, sliding one of the eggs onto a plate with a toaster strudel and topping it off with a dollop of ice cream. “That’s what you have to eat right now. That and more sauces then any one man should need.” She pushed the plate of food over to him, having the second egg for herself. “Honestly, I don’t know how you’ve stayed alive for as long as you have.”
She saw that he was dressed already and nodded thoughtfully to herself. She already felt like they were behind schedule; even though they weren’t. Maybe the time zone shift was getting to her. She herself was wearing a simple gray dress and her hair put up into a neat bun. -
Isaac shrugged comically. On the inside, however, he felt bad that he had let himself go so long without going food shopping. He was capable of thriving off of snacks and smoothies, so he hadn't really worried about it for a while. On top of that, shopping was one of the more stressful activities he had to get used to once again. There were always so many people to look out for and the amount of conversation that was typically involved in a shopping trip was enough to make his stomach churn. Hopefully, having Caroline with him would make the ordeal easier.
He quickly scarfed down the eggs so that he could eat the ice cream and toaster strudel. As mentioned, he thrived off of snacks. He basically inhaled the rest of the breakfast, flashing a smile in Caroline's direction. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't nervous. In fact, the idea of locking himself in his room seemed really enticing. But instead, he said, Are you ready for the grocery store? I sure am! -
“Yes, I think it’s time to go. The bus comes at exactly 9:45 so we should make it with a minute to spare if we leave now.” She said, grabbing her bag and her mini umbrella just in case it was dreary outside like yesterday.
Luckily for them, it was in fact very nice out. “Pleasant.” She said, removing her umbrella from her bag. It was warm and sunny. A bit humid but all and all a not so shabby day to be outside. -
Isaac reluctantly following the tall, mysterious woman out of the apartment, sure to lock the door behind him. He shoved his hands into is pockets, being sure to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity around them. He watched as they grew closer and closer to the bus station and sighed as the bus rolled to a screeching stop.
They slowly joined the line of waiting people and entered the bus. He tossed in money to cover both his and Caroline's fare. It was the least he could in return for her basically becoming like a sort of caretaker for him. -
“You did not need to pay for the bus fare. I’m already getting payed over my usual rate.” She said, offering up an empty seat to him. She had seen somewhere that it was “nice” to think of others before yourself, or something strange like that.
-
Isaac only shrugged, signing Sorry. I was just trying to be nice.. As he took his seat within the bus, he directed his attention to the window. It was easier to focus on the outside environment rather than what was going on inside of the bus. There were always outlandish individuals that seemed to have no purpose other than to make the young man uncomfortable. Something Isaac would never forget was the day in which a woman entered the bus with an industrial sized tub of macaroni and cheese. The entire ride home, she chomped and munched on the comfort food, much to Isaac's confusion and surprise.
Today, however, seemed fairly normal. There was nothing out of the ordinary striking the male's attention. This gave him hope that the shopping trip would be easy and swift. Squeakily, the bus began to drive, and Isaac watched the city's towering buildings and shops appear and disappear in rapid succession. It was similar to a stop motion movie. He smiled gently, resting his head against the window. He knew the market was pretty close by, so they wouldn't be waiting on the vehicle for too long. -
Caroline watched as Isaac stared out the window, a wistful look on his face. He was smiling. “I apologize if this question seems odd but...what are you thinking about?” She asked, leaning closer to him out of interest.
