Sweet flower finally stood up and looked at the leaders. Her tail passed around her cheek.
-
The PoolClan leader began talking. Now Ivystar couldn't ignore the spasms of pain passing regularly through her body. A wave of blackness threatened to engulf her. She felt her strength leak out of her, she could no longer stand up. She collapsed, tumbling through the air and lying still on the ground.
Appledusk wanted to run to her, but he knew he couldn't. That would give everything away. But was she dead? For once he was glad of Poppypelt urging him forward to see, close enough that he could tell she was breathing. But everything was wrong. This wasn't meant to happen.
Ryefall sighed. Ivystar never listened to her. Oh, well. She licked her sister's cheek. Ivystar's eyes fluttered open. "You fell." her sister asked, "I did?" Ryefall blinked. "Yes." -
Sweetflower laid on the ground again, making sure she could see the leader.
-
Ivystar's body convulsed. She was aware of cats staring at her, and wished she was anywhere but here. She heard a voice, sounding like it was coming from a long, long way away. "Come on, you can do it. Don't give up."
Ivystar was giving up. Every muscle in her body ached, she had no strength. But still voices urged her on. "You're almost there." She almost blacked out, then somecat was nudging her. "Lick this."
The white she-cat's strength built up just enough to open her eyes again, and lick the kit placed in front of her. "One more, and..."
The world vanished in a jarring wave of pain slamming over her. She saw she was in a lush green meadow. "Where am I?" she felt fine. Not like a moment ago. "Welcome to StarClan, Ivystar."
"So I'm dead?"
"Not for long. Watch this."
SO Ivystar watched the image in front of her. Her sister Ryefall was sobbing over her body, crumpled and still. Beside the body, a newborn, mewling kit was pressing into the growing cold fur. As Ivystar watched, a young apprentice pushed her way to the front. "Let me pull that kit out."
So that was what killed her! A kit was stuck.
The cats where reluctant, but the apprentice, Ivystar recognized her as Snowpaw, walked up to the bloodied body and stuck her paw in it.
Even without being in that
"To my body?"
"Yes."
Ivystar opened her eyes. Ryefall let out a sigh of relief. "Half way there."
'Only half way!' screamed Ivystar inside her head. But she stayed alive through the rest of the birth, and two more kits where born.
"Done."
Appledusk watched through horror-struck eyes. She'd died. Ivystar had died. Now she was alive, but..
He strained his head to see the four tiny kits. He smiled. They where so perfect, so amazing.
Ryefall stayed protectively by her sister, but she couldn't keep the laughter in. "I told you so!" she meowed. -
Sweetflower watched in horror. Was that what was going to happen to her? "Is she okay?" She yowled.
-
Ryefall stood up. "Yeah, she's fine!" Then she added quietly, "Or so we want the other Clans to believe. She just lost a life, for StarClan's sake! She's the opposite of fine." Then she considered. But, apart from the losing a life part, that was a normal birth.
Ivystar raised her head, her fur fluffed out to keep the tiny cats warm. StarClan filled her with strength. She suddenly remembered her nine lives ceremony.
"I give you your ninth life. This will be the one you'll be living when you wake up, and I have a feeling that it's special gifts will we useful to you." Sunwave's eyes clouded over. "The future is like a stormy sky, but I can see that you will be a liar before you use it." She lay her muzzle on the deputy's head. "I give you this life for knowing the love of a mother for her kits, the endless strength she has for them. You will use this strength."
That had come true.
She hoped Appledusk could see the little kits. Their eyes where closed, their fur was wet, they had no idea where they were. Still, she would die for them eight more times. Nine, even, if she could. "Let me get up," she meowed.
Appledusk tried pushing closer. He caught Ivystar's eyes. She seemed to be asking him a question, silently. He knew her expressions so well, and she was mouthing...
"Name!" Ivystar mouthed frantically. She gave one of the kits a tiny prod. It was a little she-kit, and the image of Appledusk, but she had her mother's eyes.
Appledusk nodded, mouthing back, "Cherrykit." He'd wanted to call a kit Cherrykit, but thought he'd have no say. After all he wasn't even in the kits' Clan. -
Sweetflower watched the mouthing of the two cats, knowing no cat else was watching. She smiled. 'Good, Appledusk is a father. Finally.'
-
Ivystar stood up, then climbed the Great Claw. She had something to do. "The Gathering continues now. StormClan?" It was taking a lot to stand there, head held high, her expression showing nothing. She was doing it anyway. StormClan, then BreezeClan, then ShadeClan.
Finally she jumped down with the other leaders. Her old fatigue returned; she stumbled, then picked up Cherrykit. -
Sweetflower laid down in the queen's den. She curled er tail around her belly. She hadn't had shared a nest with Raintail, or any tom.
-
The Clan walked into the camp. Fawnstep came out of the elder's den. "So, what happen-" she broke off, staring in horror. "Ivystar! You didn't! Not the one day I didn't go! Ryefall, I told you to stop her!"
Ryefall would have shrugged, if she had not been supporting her sister. "Don't tell her about my dying," whispered Ivystar. -
Sweetflower shuffled. She looked up and felt heartbroken. Her kit's wouldn't have a father. Not unless a tom liked her. But that was useless, because she didn't need a tom...or a mate...but her kits' needed a father. She looked contently outside the entrance of the den.
-
"You know what elders are like. One of the other's'll tell her. Then the great leader is in trouble." laughed Ryefall.
"I'm fine now." Ivystar took the four kits to her den. She did not know what the normal practice for leaders/queens was. Well, leaders where usually not queens. -
Sweetflower ate. And ate. Then slept. Then ate again.
-
Appledusk frowned at Sweetflower. "We're going to have no prey left at this rate. Why don't you hunt for a change?"
Cherrykit cried. Her thin, wailing mews echoed strangely. Ivystar fed her, casting her eye over the other kits. They needed names. -
Sweetflwer purred as she knew no cat had found out she was pregnant. "I can't."
