"And a bound man cannot fight." He countered with a grin. "I was really hoping I wouldn't have to break ropes into this." He said, once again intrigued by Maurice's stubborn intent on murdering him.
-
"..I would sooner throw myself over the side of the ship," He hissed, keeping his eyes on the water below them.
-
"But I would stop you." He replied, moving a little closer, just in case he actually did try to throw himself overboard.
-
"..Why? Why can't you just let me go? I hate you." He did, he truly did. Maurice just wanted to be away from here.
-
Edward shook his head. "You've nowhere to go. Your husband is dead and your village outcasts you. I do believe I'm doing you a favor by keeping you here." He responded, cocking an eyebrow.
-
"You're doing me no favor," He growled out. Anger clouded his eyes, and, without thinking, he began to climb over the side of the ship.
-
-
Edward swore and stepped forward, grabbing Maurice and pulling him back. "Are you mad?" He muttered, dragging him away from the side of the ship. "I won't allow you to kill yourself."
-
Tears leaped over the rims of his eyes, streaming down his face. Maurice let out a choked sob, yanking himself away from the man. "Just let me go! Y-You k-killed the man I-I loved.." He broke off, sobbing loudly. David was dead. And if he couldn't avenge his death, he had nothing left.
-
Edward hesitated for a moment, but did not let go, pulling the man closer to his chest. "There is more to life than love," He said quietly. "And losing one man is not worth ending your own life."
-
Maurice struggled for a moment, unable to control his sobs, cursing Edward with every nasty word he could think of. After a while, though, he grew silent and still, unmoving. He was worn out completely, and though he didn't want to, he found himself drifting off in the murderer's arms.
-
Edward shook his head and slipped an arm under Maurice's legs, hoisting him into his arms. "You need sleep." He murmured to the blonde, although he already seemed half-unconscious. The captain took him back to his cabin, locking the door behind them. He layed Maurice down in the bed and sighed, eyeing the tear tracks on his prisoner's cheeks.
-
The blonde dreamed of David. David teasing him about the length of his hair, David helping fix dinner, David working at the lumber mill, his skin sparkling with sweat. Maurice's heart sped up. David, with his salt-and-pepper hair, hearty laugh, humor-filled eyes. David, choking on blood, laying lifeless on the kitchen floor.
-
Edward watched as Maurice slept. Most people looked peaceful while asleep, but not Maurice. A nightmare, the pirate presumed, most likely about his lost husband. Edward shook his head. He simply could not understand how one person could be so endlessly attached to another, even after death.
-
In his dream, Maurice relived the moment in which David had died. This time, though, the blade was pointed at his own chest, David holding it. The young man tried to open his mouth to say something, but he couldn't. He watched as his lover's face changed to that of his father's, and then Edward's, both grinning evilly at him. The hand moved forward, plunging the blade into his heart.
He woke with a start, breathing hard. Black light drifted in from the window. It was night.
