"I meant like me," he clarified. "Uninfected humans."

"Not any here. In the town I pointed you towards, but that's a good few miles off, and it's sparsely inhabited."

"I might have to look into that," he commented. "How dangerous is it?"

She smirked. "Depends on how badass you are. The locals aren't bad, but when they get worked up it's not fun. I Infected one of their kids once...they freaked out and tried to attack the pack."

"My odds?" he asked.

Another shrug. "Don't know you well enough."

"Decent then," he decided. "Thank you," he said.

"I would say that it was no problem, but it really was. Took valuable time out of my day," Ember said, dead serious, "so I'll just say that you're welcome." She turned and started to walk away again.

James walked away from her, in the direction she had said, his pistol low and ready.

She looked back once and felt some kind of tug--as if she wanted him to stay.

James looked around, as if sensing a confrontation.

Ember quickly looked away and continued walking with more purpose. -

He made it fifty feet before a red wolf slammed into him. The two fought, and his gun went of three times. -
Ember heard the gunshot and almost instantly the wolf rose up. She felt it rise in her chest and fill her until she was the wolf. It happened more out of instinct than anything, really--she'd learned long ago what the sound of a gunshot meant. Turning towards the sound, she sniffed the air, and realized it wasn't a hunter who had shot a gun, but the man she'd met. She'd never got his name.
And then she was streaking to him. Her body hit the other wolf's and knocked it aside, a vicious snarl ripping from her throat. -
James rolled, trying to get it off of him, elbowing it in the jaw and rolling away, before he saw another wolf charge in and attack the other. Suddenly, he was unsure of who to shoot.
