Ember snorted. "Seems like a pretty stuck-up best friend."

"He killed a man deserving death," James protested.

"I was talking about the best friend that kicked you out. I've got nothing against killing people." she said, raising her eyebrows.

"I can't hate him, he was doing his job," he said.

Ember shrugged, shifting her body weight from one foot to another. "I would blame him." she said, her eyes flashing.

"Were you born before or after the world fell apart?" James asked. It was all he knew, no normal life.

"After. Only life I've ever known." Ember shrugged.

"I was born two hours before it all fell apart," he admitted. "So said my dad. Only thing I've known is crappy food, and training in a stuffy bunker."

"You know, for someone you was a complete ass at first sight, you aren't that bad." Ember commented, not wanting to go into the details of her own personal life.

"I didn't expect to find anybody," he said.

"That's the point. Wouldn't want foolish, frantic humans to blunder into these woods and kill us all." she shrugged again, eyes on his face.

"I'm just one dude, not a dozen," he said, trying to conceal that he was and had been exquisitly trained by his father.

"So I see." she said, leaning back against a tree and relaxing the tiniest bit.

"I don't think any more will follow me. Are there others?"

"What part of 'pack' do you not understand?" she asked. Not exactly in a rude way, but in a slightly brisk tone.
