James said nothing, and kept going.
-
"Hey," Ember was speaking before she could stop herself, "there's a small town," she waved her hand to the north, "you may be safer there." This time she turned and started walking back to the small town where her kind lived.
-
At mention of town, James looked back. "Thank you." he said, starting there and watching her.
-
"Wouldn't want anyone else to die in this goddamn world." Ember responded with a shrug, still walking off.
-
He glanced back at her. "Thanks."
-
She turned, and a half-smile played on her lips. "We aren't all uncontrollable savages." she said lightly, but hard anger was buried in her words.
-
James blinked, "I'm sorry," he said, realizing how he'd been an ass.
-
"It's fine," Ember said, meeting his eyes with hers, "I'm used to it."
-
He nodded, "I'm sorry..." before he got a damned fool notion of them working to survive together.
-
She tilted her head at him. "You've already said that." something inside her wondered what he was thinking. What was going on his head.
-
"I just feel bad, I've been sheltered and safe all my life, while you've been out fighting to survive."
-
Ember let out a hard chuckle that sounded suspiciously like a growl underneath the rough laughter. "Well, pretty boy, at least now you're making an effort to live. Being sheltered isn't always the best."
-
"No, it isn't," he agreed. The growl almost sounded threatening, but James waved it off.
-
She eyed him for another moment, silent. "What crime did your father commit?" she finally asked.
-
"Murder," he said. "Thirty years ago."
