Muted senses rolled over Garnet. Interest, confused fear, humor...she growled deep in her throat. Other creatures and their damned unchecked emotions.
"Watch it." She told Tresdon, before turning and leading them to the chosen ship. It was a perfect combination of the Lizord, Catanna and human ships. As for her race? They kept their ships a secret. "Think it'll work?" She asked, running a hand through her hair as she stared at it once again. It had taken her a long time to pick out. -
IHLAOY Newbie"Can these...thin metals actually handle the heat of re-entry?" Tresdon asked, pointing at the ship. While it did share the wings and design of the human ships she was used too, the metal used was clearly something other-worldly; perhaps Lizord. Maybe Catanna. Tresdon wasn't sure. "If they can, I must give credit where it's due. Imagine the possibilities of this metal in the hands of someone brilliant."
Running a finger alone the cold metal, Tresdon examined the ship closer. Well polished, surprisingly clean, no large dents or noticeable gashes. Clearly a ship that hadn't been flown yet. The revelation didn't fill Tresdon with hope. -
Sylvia crossed her arms. "The metal is tanthu, a metal commonly mined on my home planet." She explained. "It's ten times stronger than the steel humans have been using." She scrutinized the vessel carefully. "As for the engine, the gears also look made of tanthu, but the technology looks Catannian to me."
She brushed a hand over the complicated workings with an admiring grin. "It's a beatiful ship." She commented absentmindedly. Sylvia had always loved technology like this. In fact, she had built ships for a short time before beginning to train for this mission, and was quite skilled. She knew the origin of most metals, and knew the best way to build nearly anything you'd want to build. Of course that would be mostly useless on a vegitated planet like Earth... -
Garnet nodded. "She's a beauty. The engine is Catannian--after a bit of testing, we discovered they have the best engine type, but not the strongest metal. That's your race," Garnet glanced at Sylvia, "In the hands of someone brilliant? It could be made into all kinds of things. Indestructible weapons included. That's why it's used sparingly. It took a lot of persuasion"
Garnet stepped around the ship. "The model, shape, size, etc., is all mixed to make it one of the most versatile yet efficient ship that I've ever seen." She ran her hands over the back of the ship; gently, as if her slim, long fingers could damage the strongest metal known to the world(s). -
Katalina inspected the engine. "Yep. This is Catannian technology. From the looks of it, this ship can travel long distances without a terribly large amount of fuel," She mused.
Kat's father helped build engines for ships. Her mother studied plants and medicine. She was a doctor. Katalina mainly learnt from her mother, but her father also told her about different ship and engine designs and technologies. Kat was good at identifying plants and making herbal medicines. But she wasn't sure if it would be of use on Earth. Who knew what grew there now? -
IHLAOY Newbie"Any weapon can be indestructible as long as its owner cares for it. Plus it's no doubt cheaper to use this...tanthu for small scale projects." Tresdon said, ducking her head under the ship to inspect the bottom. You could learn a lot about a ship by its underside. That is, if you knew anything about ships, which Tresdon didn't. She only a few hours a day to what she wanted, and ship design wasn't one of them. (Of course, being in space, the concept of a day was a totally outdated notion, but Tresdon liked to keep a tight schedule.)
"Couldn't they find a better use for a ship like this? Really, all we needed was a drop pod that could withstand atmosphere; what's wrong with this ship that no one but us wants to use it?" Tresdon asked, before catching that wayward thought, "There's something wrong with the inside, isn't there? Quick, where's the door; open him up for me." -
Garnet rolled her eyes. "The inside of this ship is fine. I know a guy who built it for me. Hopefully she'll survive this whole thing and I can keep her afterwards." She opened the hatch anyways, allowing them to look inside. It was small, but large enough to fit them easily and prevent any uncomfortable cramming.
"See, nothing wrong." Garnet said pointedly.
(Okay, so irl I know nothing about mechanics and all that. I'm kind of making things up as I go along, bear with me.) -
Me too, so don't worry about it.)
Sylvia leaned in, catching a glimpse of the surprisingly spacious interior. It looked like all of them would fit comfortably. "She is a great ship," She nodded to the pilot.
Turning to Tresdon, she spoke. "Commander, with all due respect, a drop pod would be a highly illogical decision. We do plan on returning to the station afterwords, and this ship is strong enough- and large enough- to get us there, as well as most likley surviving the conditions on the Earth's surface environment. -
(I'm also making it up. The closest thing I know to mechanics is computers 'cause my dad works with computers.)
Katalina peeked into the ship. It looked nice and roomy for four people. It would also be likely to still intact during the expedition. Then she nodded politely to the pilot.
Kat nodded in agreement to what Sylvia said. Then she looked at the Commander. "When are we clear for takeoff, Commander?" -
IHLAOY Newbie(It's really not that hard to understand. Basically, the intake valve releases fuel into the piston, which then compresses the fuel. A spark plug then ignites it, forcing the piston down and opening the outtake valve; the expanding gas is then removed and used to power the car.)
Letting out a sigh of relief when she realized the inside was just as fine as the outside, Tresdon sat down. She hadn't seen the bridge, but she assumed it would be just like everything else on the ship. Sleek, new, and with everything a pilot might need while travelling through the void. Nothing to worry about.
"Thank you, Sylvia." Tresdon said bitterly, "But I am aware of the drawbacks to drop pods."
Adjusting her hat and waiting for everyone else to strap themselves in before she did, Tresdon nodded at the pilot. "Whenever you're ready to fly, Pluto." -
Garnet gave Tresdon an icy glare, then gestured to Kat and Sylvia to sit and fasten the seat-belt like straps. She glanced at the commander, pointing to the seat in the front. "You'll be there, since you're the commander and all that."
With that, Garnet seated herself in her own seat, starting up the engine. She smiled; this was what she loved. "Everyone good?" She looked back at the other two. -
Katalina fastened her strap. The seats were surprisingly comfortable. Kat smiled. She looked out the window. People were scrambling to make the last couple preparations before launch. When she heard the pilot's voice, she looked away from the scene outside. Kat nodded. "Yes."
She looked down and noticed she was clutching her seat. She quickly placed her hands in her lap. It was too late to be scared. They were here. She was here, doing what she wanted to do. Kat took a silent breath and looked out the window once again. -
Sylvia merely looked away at the Commander's bitter remark.
She stepped in, following Kat and sitting in a seat beside her. She pulled the strap down, and shifted so she could see out of the large hyper-strong windows. The thick glass slightly distorted everything, but the precautions were necessary, and she doubted she's be able to notice the imperfections once they entered outer space. Through the window directly next to her seat, the Lizord saw all sorts of species racing around. A brown-eared Catanna supervisor barked orders into a headset, while two human flight trackers fidgeted with the gadgets and buttons on their workspace. Across the bay, she saw more Catannas and Humans mixied together, along with the occasional Wolf-like Kanak.
Her stormy silver eyes narrowed ever so slightly as she mentally regretted her species' unsocial nature. She was the only Lizord on this mission, perhaps the only one in the space station itself. But that's just what drove her to sign for this mission anyway.
The other Lizords had laughed at her. They mocked her with questions, the most common inquiring about the point in restoring a planet only inhabited by humans (who were veiwed as an inferior race to most of her arrogant race.). She had ignored them, and still would. This mission would prove her entire species wrong. They had been appalled at the thought of her working alongside a human, but no matter how uninviting this particular human chose to be, Sylvia would press on. The mission itself was of less important than her real goal- to prove the unity of different astronomical races. -
IHLAOY NewbieThis was it.
It was nearly mind boggling to think about all the preparation that had gone into this mission. Mankind hadn't made a commitment this big since Lakia was first into the atmosphere; gold and blue burning a duel trail into the sky. A cargo of nearly three billion humans clutching their seats as they ascended into the heavens.
After all these years, they were coming home. She was coming home. The moment deserved words, deserved speeches and quotes that would last through the ages. Man was done with space; they were ready to go home. Veni, vidi, vici.
And as the counter went down and the engine kicked to life, Tresdon vowed not to let the aliens sour this moment for her. This was her moment. This was her race's moment. This was the time for mankind to really prove themselves to the galaxy. To conquer the one place left unconquered. To right the unrightable wrong. To fight the unbeatable foe. To run where the brave dare not go.
That was her mission, her duty. Nay. Her privilege. -
Garnet nodded as she turned her head back, flipping a few switches. Almost instantly, the ship slid out smoothly from its companions. She felt a shiver of anticipation run up her spine as she guided it forward, past the mixed races that milled around. Many of them paused in their business to wave; all of them knew where this ship was destined.
Earth. The word rang through her mind like a bell, and Garnet sped up until they were racing through the many lines of ships, the throngs of Catannas, humans and Kanaks. No Lizords, of course. She had been surprised to see Sylvia there, and Garnet wondered how much opposition the young Lizord's choice had been met with. No doubt it had been a lot. She could just imagine the arguments the haughty creatures would have had when they realized Sylvia was planning on joining the expedition.
Garnet shook her head and expertly guided the ship right, flicking her ears slightly as if that would help keep her mind focused on the task at hand. Her hands tightened around the steering well. She didn't have anything to prove, and she definitely had nothing to lose; this was what she wanted. With a fierce grin, she sped through the exit of the port.
And out into space.
