So this is your line of reasoning:
Someone survives a catastrophic accident
Therefor, God was protecting them.
Someone dies in a catastrophic accident.
Therefor, God works in mysterious ways.
Someone did not get into a catastrophic accident today.
Therefore, God protected them from getting into an accident.
So? No matter what happens, you can just claim that it was god's will. In other words, if God does not exist, we can expect the exact same thing to happen. Some people will die, some people will live. -

I DON'T CARE WHAT THE "UNKNOWN" REASON WAS, I KNOW GOD DOESN'T EXIST, AND IF HE DID HE WOULD NOT LET MY FAMILY DIE IN VAIN
BECAUSE OF GOD THERE WILL BE MILLIONS DEAD PER DAY OF FAMINE, MALNUTRITION, DISEASE, ACCIDENTS, AND HOMICIDE
A CHILD DIES EVERY 7 SECONDS OF MALNUTRICION
