Rhiley frowned, standing in silence for a while. "Weee bee frreendsss?" It made sense to her. If they were friends, then neither would be lonely anymore.
-
Alex smiled, his eyes lighting up like stars. "Yes." This could be a start to a beautiful friendship, he thought.
-
Rhiley smiiled back, annd looked up at the sky again. A small, gray cloud was drifting over the sun, shadowing the plaza for a split second.
-
Alex noticed the time. "I have to get back to work... But..." He quickly took out a scrap of paper and a pen, scrawling his phone number and name on it in his boxy manuscript. He pressed it into her palm, closing her fist around it.
-
She watched Alex leave, then looked at the sring of numbers. 123-456-7890 She kept a firm grip on them all the way home. If she were thinking clearly, then she might've noticed the earily quiet streets.
-
Alex closed himself back into the small building and stared at the computer monitors. No activity, whatsoever.... It must be a raid night.
(Raids are when government officials and the military march around all of the cities and verify every citizen's ID and validity. They are spontaneous and violent.) -
She reached her house no problem, but as soon as she made it up the staires there was a knock at the door. She sat down where she was, and watched as her mother entered the main room and opened the door. STanding on the porch were two military officers.
You wanna be one of them? -
Sure.
"This is a raid. We need registration and proof of citizenship from everyone within your facility," one of the soldiers barked out in a low, intimidating voice. His hand rested on the handle of his gun that protruded just barely out of his pocket.
Alex locked up the security 'shack', as he'd liked to call it, and headed home. He lived in an apartment on the West End, a luxurious end of the city. The city had provided all workers that help to ensure the success of the cure and safety a free estate there. -
I'm sorry D: My internet connection hasn't been the best, lately
"Of course, give me just a minute to fetch them." Rhiley's mother, Kala, replied. She walked up the staires, shooting a cold glance at her daughter on the way. Not that she could look at her any other way, Kala's eyes were always cold. Rhiley kept her eyes on the soldiers, curiosity flowing. -
That's okay. I've been through it all; I can relate.
The soldier, Jules Brown, drummed his fingers impatiently as he waited. His colleague stood rigid as a wall, a blank expression on his face. It was clear he didn't enjoy this as much as Brown did.
Alex let himself into his apartment and sat by the window. He remembered hearing about a party going on in the outskirts of town. He had to warn them... The last party that fell on a raid night had ended in many deaths and pools of blood. He had just barely made it out without being killed by one of the dogs. -
Kala came back down the staires with a file in her right hand. She handed it over to the soldier, and crossed her arms. "Papers for my husband, daughter, and myself." She licked her lips, a nervous habit not even the surgery could quench.
-
Brown took the files into his hands and scanned the pages, verifying the ID numbers and bar codes in the system. "You're clean," he grunted, handing back the files. "Have a good night," he said blandly before turning and walking down the steps. He gestured for his colleague, John Springs, to follow. He lingered on the doorstep for a second.
"Thank you for your time, ma'am," he said quietly, giving her a smile, his brown eyes like caramel; warm, sweet, and kind. The military uniform and shaved head gave him an edginess that didn't quite fit, like a suit that was a tad bit tight on the shoulders and around the waist.
"Let's go, Springs!" Brown hollered from the sidewalk. Springs flinched a bit at the sudden barking of his partner in business.
"Right, yes..." He nodded to Kala, offering her a weak smile before turning and walking to the sidewalk. He seemed too timid, meek, and mild to be one in the military. Anyone with common sense would be able to tell.
Alex sighed and paced around the room before changing into jeans, sneakers, and a dark sweatshirt. He would have to be vigilant and fast in order to reach the outskirts in time. He couldn't help but wonder if the girl from the square would be there. He silently hoped she would be, then realized the horrors of this thought. No, no, no... She has to be safe in her home. -
Kala's cold eyes went narrow, and she watched the two until they were at the next house. She closed the door, and looked up at Rhiley. "You're lucky the expiration date was smuged." she said, her voice suddenly unaturally low, "Get up to bed." Rhiley nodded and did as her mother said. She sat next to her open window, watching the two officers, who now looked like ants, move from house to house.
-
Alex walked along the streets of the city until he reached the suburban area that had already been checked and verified. He started to sprint, his feet making the faintest patting noises as they hit the pavement with every long stride. His hair blew around as he ran. His breath quickened and he checked the time on his watch. s---. It's been ten minutes. They could have already reached the party by now.
-
As the officers faded away, a sound like dripping water made it's way to her ears. Rhiley leaned out, looking up and down the street for the source.
