Rhiley stood outside her parents room, listening to their conversation. It was about her, and as always, they were discussing her operation. Her mother wanted it as soon as she turned eighteen, but her father was against it. He said that was the busiest days of the year, and that they should take her in the day after. She was sad that they didn't like her, and she didn't understand what was so important about her operation. She made her way to the front door, figuring the lovely outside world would lighten her mood.
-
Alex sighed and tossed his empty water bottle into the recycling bin. He walked up to the statue, a cold hatred surfacing in his eyes as he turned to face it.
You might have the power now, but eventually we'll knock you down.
He noticed sideways glances from people around him. He coughed and nodded curtly at them before heading back to the wall he was sitting on. -
She kept her eyes down, ignoring the quick glances she got from those who already had their operation. She knew they didn't like either, because she had what they called imperfections. But the air was fresh and warm, so she smiled.
-
Eventually the plaza emptied. His eyes drifted to a girl about his age, making her way to the center. He couldn't help but smile. She was small and innocent... But she looked so sad. I know. I know that you're getting your procedure soon. I wish I could help you. I really do. he thinks to himself as he gazes at her.
-
Rhiley looked up at the cloudless sky thinking about nothing in particular. She then looked around at the near vaccant plaza. As her eyes passed Alex, they quickly shot to the ground. She focused her attention on her fingers, which resembled a bucket of worms just then.
-
Alex wanted to say hello, to introduce himself... He was supposed to have gotten the cure; he had replicated the scar with his pocket knife before coming into the city. Would anyone find it suspicious that a cured boy would talk to an uncured girl? He didn't want to take any risks... But he did anyway. "Hello," he said quietly, still watching her.
-
She blinked in suprise and hesitated. She nodded in response, keeping her eyes on her hands. She was confused to say the least. Her parents had always told her that they were the only ones who would talk to her, and for the most part they were right. Only a few people had ever talked to her, but they hadn't had the surgery.
-
He stood up and closed the distance between them, leaving about a twelve inches worth of space. He smiled warmly. "Lovely day, isn't it?"
-
Rhiley nodded again, heart picking up speed. She wasn't good with conversations, they made her nervous. She thought that if she kept her eyes down he'd go away, yet.....there was something about him. Something that made him almost...trustworthy.
-
Alex looked at her, his eyes full of warmth and kindness; a sea of bright green twinkling in the afternoon sun. "Don't worry," he said, gesturing towards his security badge, "I'm not out to get you," he joked. "Just a guy out looking for some friendly conversation. It gets pretty lonely sometimes."
-
(Going to grab some lunch. I'll be back in a bit.)
-
Rhiley looked at his badge, and then at his face. He had to have the prettiest eyes in the world. "L-loonlee.....saaadd....." Her words were drawled out, and sounded as if she had to force them to come out.
Okie doks, see ya when you get back -
(I just made the most wonderful fresh salad. All of the greens, lettuce, and radish, plus carrots and peppers. Then, to top it off, a splash of olive oil and a topping of roasted sunflower seeds.)
Alex nodded. "Yes... It is quite sad being lonely." He wanted to get to know this girl; to at least know her name. But, given the public setting, he couldn't. -
It sounds delicious
"Nnnooo frreendsss..?" she asked. Of course, she didn't have any friends, but she had asumed others must. Where else would that word come from? -
Alex shook his head. "Nope. Friendship's pretty scarce around here. Unless you have it all, you get nothing."
