"What's your family like?" I felt like asking random questions.

"Let's see... I have three younger sisters and an older brother. My mother died giving birth to my last sister, and my father is the joint leader of the Districts," Eric said, thinking carefully. "My older brother is already married and should take my father's place when he dies, but I'm the most powerful of the five of us, so I technically should. But I can't."

"Your parents choose who you marry before you're born. They have to be born within a week of your birth. And the person I was born for died before birth." Eric shrugged.

"So on your planet they arrange marriages, and don't let you fall in love by chance. That's messed up."

"Earth used to have arranged marriages a lot, didn't it?"

"Yeah, but that was a few centuries ago. Except for India, they still do it."
