"No problem." Kawa's mom said, "It's nice to see Kawa-chan bringing friends over again."
-
Mai smiled and glanced over at Kawa. They both knew they were more than friends to one another.
-
Kawa glanced over and smiled as well. "Hey mama, did you find out more about the writing conntest?" "Oh, yes." she said, getting up and leaving the room. When she returned, she had a small packet with information, dates, and rules. As well as a sign up sheet on the back.
-
Mai looked at the folder and started thinking about how great it would be if she and Kawa won. To finally be noticed... In a good way.
-
"So, wha do you two plan on writing about?"
-
Mai glanced over at Kawa and took a breath. "The discrimination at school... the discrimination against gays and bisexuals."
-
"It's still like that? I had hoped it changed since I was there." she said, and Kawa shook her head. "It's still there, thriving and not going away anytime soon."
-
Mai bowed her head. "I'm living proof."
-
"Well, I'm thrilled you two are doing something to stop it. I never did, and maybe if I had things would've been different." she said, wrapping her arms around them both.
-
Mai hugged Kawa's mother back. "Maybe they'll finally realize their mistakes... I kind of live by this quote. Kawa already knows it, but it goes like this: You laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at you because you're all the same." She paused and her voice dropped in volume a bit. "Sometimes that's the only way I can get through it, just saying that quote over and over in my head."
-
"That's a nice quote." Racheal said (finally gave her a name xD) taking her empty container of ice cream to the kitchen.
-
Mai ate the rest of her icecream and turned to Kawa. "Your mom doesn't seem uncomfortable with me around... That's a new thing for people I've just met."
-
"Mama's always been really open. Half the friends she had were homosexual and bisexual outcasts." Kawa said, smiling.
-
Mai smiled. "You're mother's nicer to me than my own mother..."
-
"That's the great thing about having a friend. You can always go to the other family for comfort. Well, almost always."
