The moon glistened in the raven-black sky, the stars twinkling around it. The time was exactly 12:53 and a girl was lying awake on her new bed. It was a double bed with a white quilt patterned with lilac hearts. As she pulled out her notebook she sighed. It was new-like her bed-and coloured garnet. She fiercely rubbed a tear from her eye. This is what she had inherited from her Grandma who had died a week earlier....
-
Sleeping in her Grandma's bed seemed somehow wrong. She hadn't died in it, but it gave her a strange swirly feeling in her stomach. Her family was able to choose one thing each from her Grandmother's belongings, before the will would be assessed by and everyone included in it would be given their share 6 months later. With these thoughts spinning in her head, she turned on the lamp. She knew it was silly for a girl of her age to be scared of the dark, but she couldn't help it.
-
Slowly, she sat up. As her eyes adjusted to the new light she once again took out the garnet notebook. Her fingers shook as she gripped the leather strap and gently pulled it of the notebook. It sprung at little and then the notebook fell open. Holli immediately dropped it on the bed-scared of what secrets would lie inside. With a deep breath, she turned the first page.
-
On the first page, she saw the words, 'Rosalie's diary. KEEP OUT SEBASTIAN!!' She frowned. She knew her Grandma's name was Rosalie, but who was Sebastian? She turned the crusty, yellow pages with trembling hands. The first entry wasn't like the cringey diary books she had seen at the library. It wasn't labelled with a date and didn't start off with words like ' I HATE MY MUM' or screaming sounds.
-
She took a deep breath and began to read.
Dear diary,
My name is Rosalie Longwood. I am ?? years old and today is my birthday. I have received you as one of my beautiful and outstanding gifts. It came from one of the most unexpected people. Sebastian Longwood.
I know what you are thinking-why would it be unnatural for a family member to give you a present? Well here's why....
When I was a child me and Sebastian were very close cousins. That may of been because we lived as neighbours, on the very same street. Rose Avenue.
Quite a pretty name for a road, I have always thought. I lived in Rose Cottage with my parents Lillia and Peter Longwood. Mother is very delightful and is still alive to this day as she had me at a very young age-I cannot state exactly as she has never told me but I believe it was in her very late teens or the beginning of adult-hood. I still have had a proper upbringing and I hope I have brought my children up in a way they can respect and copy this behaviour.
Anyway, I shall explain my past more further into this diary. As I was saying, me and Sebastian were very close and we even went to the same school! I was very lucky as most of the girls on my street go to Private schools for ladies which I think is strictly ridiculous but my Mother was kind enough to let me choose which school I attended and of course I chose the mixed school. I hope I am not ranting on too much. I wish i could say much more but I must celebrate the rest of my birthday with my family and I'm afraid to say Sebastian has just arrived at my front door.
BiscuitBear37: Everyone committing this story is doing really well. I know it has been just me and LittleNerd so far but please feel free to contribute! I have left the Grandma's age on this diary entry blank so if you have any age suggestions of how old she should be when she writes the diary please tell me! Once again, Thank you so much LittleNerd and anyone else who will contribute in the future or have helped me on my other story! :) :) :) :) -
Holli snapped the book shut and threw it to the end of her grandmother's bed. The question still lingered in her mind: Who is Sebastian? She sat there for a moment, trying to recall anything her grandmother might have told her about her relatives.
Nothing.
She slowly got out of bed, checking the clock. 1:23 am. The cold floorboards made her wince as she tip-toed down the hall, into the parlour. There was always a poster in the parlour of the family tree, so it was the first thing you saw when you walked into Rose House. She inspected it, looking for a Sebastian somewhere next to her grandmother's name. It wasn't there.
'How curious,' Holli whispered to herself. The family tree poster went way back to her Great-Great Grandparents. It included all of her grandmother's other cousins. Where was Sebastian?
LittleNerd: I'm glad I've helped out with this book, it's been a very good way to spend my spare time! I can't wait to see how it plays out! -
ACK ACK I MEAN ROSE COTTAGE
-
When she next woke, she was sprawled on the parlour floor. "What am I doing in here?" she asked herself curiously.
Then it hit her, Sebastian. She had one more look around the family tree praying that she would see her grandmother's cousin.
"Ugh" Holli groaned and kicked over a bucket. It clattered to the floor with a loud BANG! Holli's father came running into the room holding a baseball bat!
He looked around curiously and then spotted Holli.
"Sorry Dad. I accidently knocked the bucket over"
She lied.
"Alright. But what are you doing in here? It's not even 6:00am yet and you look like you've hardly slept!" He exclaimed.
Holli scraped her brain for a back-up story. Holli yawned. "Oh yeah, I was reading and I lost track of time!" This wasn't exactly a lie-anyway the best lies are mixed with truth.
"So you were in here because?" He pushed further wanting to know more.
"I was getting another book" Holli gestured at the small bookshelf and picked out an old Dickens book. Dad raised his eyebrows.
"I thought I'd try a classic-after reading Oliver at school-I quite enjoyed it!" Again not strictly a lie. I had enjoyed Oliver but I found it very hard to understand.
"Okay! Sounds great darling. Just try and get some sleep- remember it's Saturday!"
I give him a sleepy smile before walking back to my bedroom- and walking back to Grandma's old bed.
BiscuitBear37: I'm very glad to you are contributing LittleNerd. I'm also very excited to see this story gets along. Thank you very much as I couldn't of done it without you! What age should the Grandmother be when she is writing the diary. She needs tobe old enough to have kids but young enough not to have grandchildren. Thanks :) -
She flopped down onto the bed, grunting.
Sebastian Longwood. Longwood Sebastian. Tiansebas Woodlong.
She tried to remember something, anything about him. But there was nothing. She was practically certain she'd never heard that name in her life. Her grandmother never mentioned him in the long lectures about the Longwood family. She was always very proud to have such a respected family and great heritage. But she'd never mentioned her cousins.
Holli remembered how her grandmother showed her albums of the family, random men and women from 100 years ago. Wait...
The albums! Her grandmother had never let her touch the picture albums. Maybe she'd skipped the photos of her cousins, which would where Sebastian Longwood's picture would be!
She had to get to the basement, but if her dignified father - or worse, her mother - caught her again, she would be given a lecture about the right types of behaviour and locked in her room. She had to be careful.
LittleNerd: I think the grandmother should be in her early twenties, or even late teens? Women had children when they were very young, back in the "old days". Middle to late twenties would be fine too, whatever you're OK with! Also, if you read that whole (very LOOONG) paragraph, you're a legend!!! -
Holli decided against visiting the basement today. It was a Saturday and her parents would be watching her every move-she was sure they were suspicious of her after earlier that morning.
And so, the day flew by very slowly. Holli's mother who was called Marion had eyes of a hawk and watched her suspiciously- she had been since John (Holli's father) had told her of the morning's events. She had already listened to many lectures that day, and she wasn't looking forward to anymore. While her parents made dinner she thought threw her plot.
HOLLI'S PLAN
1. Set Alarm Clock too 5:00am
Sunday-Parents off work-normally get up around 9:00 so I have about 3 1/2 hours.
2. Research Sebastian Longwood- Information so far: Grandma's cousin. Went to the same school. Live on the same street-Rose Avenue.
3. Do not kick over any buckets or anything else that is loud- Dad will come running in with his baseball bat and not only will I be given lectures about being up early, going in forbidden rooms and my parents would probably go rouge and send me to a counsellor!
She quickly changed my alarm before taking out her phone, but she only got as far as typing Se then Marion took it of her.
"Nope! You stopped me and your father from have a good night's sleep-so you can have this back on Monday and only because you need it for school!"
Holli groaned and her eyes fell to number three on her notes- She added enough note underneath it.....
Do not break this rule or I will be locked in my room as well as loosing my phone.
BiscuitBear37: I'm happy to have the grandmother in her early twenties but remember this is our story nut just mine! :) I always read your paragraphs-not only because I need it for the storyline but because it's really entertaining! You will make a great author! I hope you are enjoying my parts of the story as well but if not please tell me how I can improve on this. Thanks :) -
My= Her
I is meant to be she.
Sorry about that! :) -
Paragraph:
Without her phone, Holli's investigation wouldn't be any easier. If Sebastian was still alive, he might just be her neighbour!
Her heart fluttered with excitement at the thought. She didn't want to continue reading the notebook without knowing who Sebastian Longwood is, so she tucked the notes under her bed and skipped down to the Parlour.
'Hey mum,' she said.
'Yeah?'
'Have you ever heard of... Sebastian Longwood?'
'Sebastian Longwood,' her mother muttered. 'Why?'
'Uhh...' she bit her lip and thought of all those cheesy American high school shows she'd seen her older sister watch. 'Err... School assignment.'
Her mother raised her eyebrows. 'Holli Survenson, are you absolutely sure? Because I don't think anyone from my family would be worth learning about in a primary school.'
'I- Err.. Well, L-Longwood is a very popular name in.. uh.. Asia! Yes A-Asia. Anyway, good talk! Can I go to the library?' Without waiting for an answer, Holli grabbed her backpack, stuffed in the notebook from her back pocket in the back pocket, as well as a water bottle and her library book (for the sake of the lie).
She left dashed to the door, smiling at her mum, and leaving. Through the screen door, she poked her tongue out at the family tree poster, and left. Obviously, she didn't plan to go to the library.
LittleNerd: I'm enjoying writing this story as well! I'm happy to contribute, I have nothing much to do these school holidays so I'm glad I found this thread! -
As she left the house, she turned right walked for a minute and then stopped staring right at Daisy Cottage. The house next door was Rose cottage- Grandma's old home. Holli took a deep breath and knocked on the door of Daisy cottage. She waited. Nothing happened. She sighed and turned round when she heard a voice.
"Who are you?"
She turned round hope bouncing in her limbs-but it wasn't Sebastian just a woman who looked like her Grandma!. Colour drained out of Holli's and just as she opened her mouth to reply she fainted and her body crumpled to the ground. -
For a moment, all she saw was a black world. A world where there was no Sebastian Longwood, no strange parents, no brown leather notebook. When she grew conscious, her ears were ringing and everything hurt. She wanted more than anything to go back to the black world. Still, she forced her eyes open and winced at the sudden light.
'You're awake,' said the old woman she'd mistaken for her grandma.
Holli squinted at her. There was something about this woman.. 'Grandaunt Lizbeth?' she gasped.
'Who... Holli?' Grandaunt Lizbeth wrapped her arms around Holli pulling her close. Confused and sleepy, Holli noticed she was in a different house, with a crackling fire in front of her. She was on a patchwork couch, being suffocated by her Grandaunt.
She'd recognised her Grandaunt from the family tree. Lizbeth Longwood was her Grandma's sister.
When the old woman finally let go, she said with a Scottish accent, 'Oh, I haven't seen you since you were a wee toddler! Look at how much you've grown!'
Holli pulled away from her. ' Uh.. thanks? Now I'll just get going, thank you for you hospitality.' It hurt her legs, but she forced herself into a sitting position and sped to the front door. She reached for the doorknob, but hesitated with her hand hovering over it. She turned back to her Grandaunt.
'Do you know a Sebastian Longwood?'
Lizbeth flinched at the name. 'How do you know about him? Rosalie was supposed to never mention his name to anyone! Nonetheless to you! '
