Briar giggled, curling closer to Lawrence. “Jesus, y’all are both too cute for your own good,” Lucinda teased, giggling softly as they patted Briar’s back.
-
Lawrence rolled his eyes, holding Briar close. He glanced up as his boyfriend’s father walked in the room, but he pecked Briar’s jaw and gently let go.
-
Briar looked over and sat up, watching his father walk in. He took a deep breath and called everyone’s attention, picking up his journal. “Okay. I’m sure everyone is wondering why I called you all here,” he spoke, his hand shaking from nerves.
-
Lawrence leaned back in his seat, looking at Briar with an affectionate smile. Alador narrowed his eyes in suspicion.
-
“I have gathered you all here to tell you, that I have decided to resign as king, and hand my role over to my cousin, Lucinda,” Briar spoke, glancing down at his journal. A murmur echoed through the room from the people at the table, making Briar a little nervous. “I’ve thought about this long and hard, and I’ve come to realize that being king isn’t what I want. So, I will be stepping down, and your new ruler will be Lucinda.”
-
Alador looked gobsmacked. Then his face contorted into a scowl. ‘What?!’ he shouted, standing up. ‘Briar, you can’t do that!’
-
“Yes, I can,” Briar spoke, glaring shortly at his father. “I am the one with the power, and I choose to give it to Lucinda.”
-
Alador stared at him, stunned into silence. His pride didn’t let Briar get away with it. ‘Son, you can’t seriously be doing this. Think of the humiliation! The kingdom will see you as a failure!’ Lawrence looked down.
-
“The only failure I see is the failure of a father shouting at his own son!” Briar shouted, clenching one hand into a fist and the other tightly around his journal. “You have no say in the decisions I make, and I do not care what you think about my choices-“
-
Alador scowled. He stepped closer to Briar but Lawrence put an arm in front of his boyfriend. ‘Don’t you dare touch him.’
Alador glared at Lawrence, then looked back at Briar. ‘Be reasonable! You’re seriously going to step down from the most important and respected role in society because you don’t want to do it?!’ -
“Yes, I am. And if you have something to say about it, you can hand it with Lucinda,” Briar spoke as Lucinda moved to stand in front of him. “I think you should leave, Sir Alador,” they spoke harshly, glaring at the older man.
-
Lawrence averted his gaze. Alador gaped like a goldfish, then gave a frustrated ‘Ugh!’ and stormed out.
-
Briar exhaled shakily, leaning against Lawrence. He hugged onto him, trying to stay calm. Lucinda quickly wrapped up the meeting, explaining that the details of the coronation would be worked out and the date would be announced soon.
-
Lawrence weakly put an arm around him, leaning back in his chair. He exhaled shakily but knew he had to comfort Briar. ‘Hey, it’s okay.’
-
Briar curled closer to Lawrence, burying his face in his chest. “I’m so sorry about him, Briar,” Lucinda said with a sigh, glancing at him for a moment before looking back at the group of people leaving.
