“To be honest, they’re not all that upset,” Adrienne commented, bringing the cigarette back to their mouth. “They just tell me to do my best. And I do, on the tests and projects, just- the homework’s dumb so why bother?”
-
"you do the homework to raise your GPA which will make your family happy and your teachers will be proud. You can go on field trips and avoid finals. The best part is getting into a good profession so you get lots of money and support your family." Octavia said before putting her pencil case away and putting back on her bag
-
Adrienne looked over at Octavia, raising an eyebrow. “Is that really your thought process?” They asked, chuckling softly. “Damn- that kind of sucks, not gonna lie. Like, why not enjoy life? Do what makes you happy??”
-
"i enjoy my life enough. At some point you have to give up some joy so that your life continues to be good. It isn't bad. If you don't keep up you have to deal with the annoying things life throws at you, like having me bug you about homework." Octavia said
-
“I don’t mind the company, honestly~”Adrienne said with a smirk, nudging Octavia’s side. “Everyone else pretty much avoids me like the plague, so- It’s kinda nice,” they added quietly, a small smile on their face. They suddenly stopped, exhaling smoke. “Ah, I need to sit for a bit, head’s spinnin’ a little,” they said, slurring their words a bit.
-
"you don't sound well. Do you have asthma? Cancer sticks certainly don't help with that." Octavia said before looking around for a bench for Adrienne to sit on.
-
“I did when I was little, I think-“ Adrienne coughed, chuckling. “Think the high is just finally hitting me,” they said, staggering forward for a moment to steady themselves.
-
"oh god, don't tell me you were actually smoking weed this whole time." Octavia said with disappointment in her voice. "Anyways there's a bench right there so you should sit down." Octavia said, pointing to a bench.
-
“Mm, I’ll never tell~” Adrienne replied, chuckling as they staggered over to the bench. They slumped down on it, bringing the cigarette back to their mouth. They exhaled a puff of smoke, zoning out for a moment.
-
Octavia stood beside the bench and started writing in her spiral notebook. She often would write down small things going on around her as well as small journal passages about her day. At the moment she was writing down everything she knew about cigarettes and red bull
-
Adrienne watched Octavia for a moment, scooting over. “Take a seat, I won’t bite~” They teased, smirking playfully at the girl as they took a sip of their Redbull.
-
Octavia looked over at Adrienne. She looked back at her notebook before sitting down. "So what do your parents care about that's not grades?" Octavia asked as she continued writing.
-
“Kinda just my well-being? My mental health? Preventing me from ending it all??” Adrienne said, shrugging as they took another sip of the Redbull. “I never really wanted to smoke, but it just- became a way to calm my nerves, I guess.”
-
"well, um, it's better than alcoholism. Alcoholism can kill you in just a day, cigarettes can take up to forty years to kill you and sometimes the damage can be completely reversed when you stop smoking. It's a much more hopeful situation." Octavia said. She started drawing a diagram for the statistics.
-
“Hm- Guess I picked the right path, huh?” Adrienne said with a chuckle, bringing the cigarette up to their mouth and inhaling the smoke. They exhaled through their nose, humming softly. They took the blunt and tapped it against the arm of the bench, putting it out. “I am tryna quit, for my parents’ sake. Figured if I can at least do this for them, I won’t be much of a let down, or a failure.”
