"You... You know them." Max said after a minute, curling his knees up to his chest.

Hazel paused. 'Is it Theo's girlfriend? Is it Theo-'

"Oh my god, it's not Theo!" Max laughed nervously, avoiding the question as much as he could.

Hazel shrugged. 'I was just checking! And you didn't answer the part about Theo's girlfriend! I won't tell anyone, promise-'

"Ugh, I don't like Theo's girlfriend." Max mumbled, knowing she'd find out the truth sooner or later.

'But I don't know anyone else here!' Hazel said.

Max went quiet, propping his chin on his knees.

Hazel frowned. Her eyes widened as she realised. 'Wait-' she said, shifting her position. 'I-It's not me, is it?' She laughed nervously. 'I mean-'

Max sighed. "I'm sorry, I know it's fast and you definitely don't like me back, I just- I mean, you asked-" He ended his sentence with a groan, not knowing what to say without making it awkward.

Hazel's eyes widened. She blushed pink and looked down, unsure what to say.

"I-I'm sorry for making it awkward. You can leave if you want."

Hazel checked the time on her phone. 'I-It's okay. I should, um, go to the bakery with my brother now, anyway,' she stood up, fidgeting with her hands. 'Er, text me later? O-Or whenever you feel like it?'

Max nodded. "Yeah, o-ok." He sighed, standing up to walk her to the door.

Hazel followed him to the door, rubbing her arm.
