“I dunno, it’s just- what I’ve been told,” Onyx spoke, shrugging a little.

"all the people that stay in the room above mine are big kids. I actually don't usually like them because they're all friends with Tom. Tom hates me and tries to get me whooped all the time." Bee said. She stood on one leg and rubbed her twisted ankle.

"Huh." It certainly anything Harley had been taught. "Weird."

'I just followed the other new kids,' Billie said, playing with Emit's ears as he used the stick to draw a stickman.

Onyx exhaled softly, laying back down and staring at the ceiling.

"Marta would probably give you a whooping if she was less concerned. Maybe if I stick close to you I won't get another whooping." Bee said. Bee picked up a stick. It was fairly long. It would've made a good sword if it weren't so scratchy. There were also far too many stray twigs.

Harley sighed. Why were kids around her so bizarre?

'Maybe,' Billie said. He directed an ant onto his finger and held it up to the light, letting it crawl around on his hand. 'What exactly is a "big kid"?'

Onyx tried to will themselves to go back to sleep but failed, staring at the ceiling in annoyance.

"a big kid is a kid who's older than you. Or a kid that's tall I guess? Yessica said that when I turned eleven I'd be a big kid so maybe it starts there." Bee said.

Harley noticed Onyx's facial expression, looking like they wanted the ceiling to crumble. "What's the matter with you?" She asked. It sounded ruder than she intended, but oh well.

Billie stood up and in front of Bee, comparing their heights. ‘I don’t think I’m that tall. We’re the same height.’

“Nothing, mind your own business-“

"well, I can't stand fully right now because of my twisted foot." Bee said. It was only half true. She was leaning at the same height she always was

"Why?" Harley asked the way an annoying 2 year old would.
